Holiday basket of pinecones and all I can think about is phyllotaxis, the pattern that leaves of a plant make in attaching to the stem, is pretty much the most interesting thing I keep coming back to these last few months.

The scales on a pine cone, called bracts, are formed by two spirals going in opposite directions. The number of spirals are both always numbers in the Fibonacci sequence. Phi played out in three-dimensional space!
