A Puppy Named Maddy

When I asked Meredith what she wanted for her upcoming birthday, she told me "I don't know how much longer I can go on not having a dog." So began our quest for our first pooch. After falling in love with Leigh's dog, Edie, I really wanted to get a miniature dappled daschund. After a couple of weeks looking locally, we finally found a daschund breeder out in Kentucky (Roxane's Daschunds) with a dame who'd just had a litter of dappled pups, and so a about week before Meredith's birthday...

...we found ourselves at the OVERSIZED ITEMS carousel at JFK waiting to for the arrival of our dog!

She arrived wrapped in a blanket inside a tiny crate. We took her out and she was cold, shivering and making adorable "mewling" noises. We took her out of the crate and she was delighted to be with us immediately. We couldn't get over how cute she was.

As soon as we got her into the warmth of a cab, she stopped with all the strange mewling noises she was making and immediately settled down. We were trying to hold her on our laps, but she kept climbing up and wedging her self between our backs and the seat. It seemed like she really wanted to sit perched up on our shoulders.

See? It was so unbelievable. This photo looks totally staged with her little paw draped over my shoulder, but this was how she wanted to ride right from the get-go. It was about this time that we realized we'd gotten a weirdo.

Out of the cab and carrying her to our apartment.

This is your new home! You live here now!

Trotting around doing some exploring. (Look how long her front leg looks! Ha!)
Such a studious little eater.

When we finally got her to hold still in the light, we realized that she had one brown eye and one blue eye (complete heterochromia).

Her neck smells like soft puppy.

What is the magical chemical compound(s) in puppy breath? Why does their breath smell better than the most expensive scents? Why does it have to go away?

Love Maddy! You should hook Roxane up with your CSS skills and give her website a little love. Just a freshening up and her site will be pimping like your new design.

I remember this differently! Maddy didn't arrive wrapped in a blanket. She arrived shivering and scared on newspaper. It was a cold night and there was a line for taxis at the airport. I took off my sweater and swaddled her up in it.
