They haven't really cleared away any of the dense jungle from the perimeter of the structure. The temple's stairs are overgrown and crumbling away so you climb the pyramid via a makeshift set of scaffold-stairs they've built alongside the structure.
jungle
...we hiked our way through the jungle again for a bit to Tikal's Temple IV. Built in 741 AD and standing 212 feet tall, "Temple IV is the tallest pre-Columbian structure still standing in the New World."

When Tikal's Temple I finally came into view, I was taken back.

After leaving the visitor's center, you have to walk through the jungle for twenty minutes or so.
jungle
Check out the size of this tree's massive seed-pod, um, thingy!
jungle
No big deal, just a ten-foot long crocodile.
jungle
Neat to be in a place that still has really large wild animals.

jungle
Baddest dude EVAAAAAAAR.
jungle
Our guide Percy paused and casually asked "Anyone thirsty?" before slashing his machete in a diagonal arc at a thick vine above his shoulder and offering the fresh water pouring out of it for each of us to drink.

So amazing / horrifying! (Dear non-vegetarians, I hope you remember this photo next time you tuck into a delicious crab and/or lobster! Ew! Ew! Sea bugs!)

Percy was an awesome guide. We paused at this huge bamboo grove to listen to the CAH-RAZY sounds of the howler monkeys in the distance barking / screaching to each other!
jungle
...some howler monkeys up in the trees.
jungle
They are so fast!
jungle
Percy decorated my jacket with a leaf to demonstrate it's sticky, velcro-like surface.
jungle
The jungle was lush, dense and filled with all sorts of exotic plants like these huge palm fronds...

After going 90 minutes up river, we stopped for a hike through a wildlife preserve.
jungle
...light-orange birdbath-shaped mushrooms...

After barely managing to eek out an hour or so of sleep, I woke up around 7am the next morning...
