On Friday morning I awoke to the sound of the Parks department cutting down my favorite Willow tree in La Plaza Cultural.
tree
The tree's roots had been damaged by salt water when the neighborhood flooded during hurricane Sandy and they were worried about it eventually falling over and hurting someone.
tree
Tree hugging buds.
tree
We stopped deep in the woods and communed with some trees.
tree
By the time we got back from the store, my timber-farmer neighbor had come by with his tractor and dragged the fallen tree off of my road. Thanks, Tom!

My truck was loaded with stuff I was bringing to the cabin. I made it almost to the top of my private mountain road only to find it blocked by a fallen tree!

tree
I'm not 100% sure, but maybe this is some of London Kaye's earlier yarn-bombing work?
tree
Took Maddy for a stroll through La Plaza and noticed that someone had recently knit a sweater for one of the trees inside! So cute!

On Wednesday, I was walking Maddy in East River Park again and she was being extra feisty with the squirrels so I decided to let her off the leash for a second.

"The best-known is "The Crystal Maiden", the skeleton of a teenage girl, possibly a sacrifice victim, whose bones have been calcified to a sparkling, crystallized appearance." You were allowed to bring cameras into here and photograph everything "In late May 2012, a tourist accidentally dropped a camera and fractured a human skull estimated to be over one thousand years old. As a result, all cameras without a permit are banned from the cave" So, because of that person, all you get to see are pictures of the teak tree farm we had to drive through...
tree
This photo does not really convey how massive this tree was.

Locally, this tree is called a "gringo tree" because the tree's peeling bark looks like the sunburnt skin of all the white tourists. Haha. (This is all info I learned from X on my Monkey River tour!)
tree
The weird, shiny orange tree on the right is called a gumbo limbo tree and contains the antidote to the also-local terrible poison-ivy- x-100 that you get from coming into contact Black Poisonwood tree.

It's almost easy to miss them, but if you look at the underside of the tree you see a row of bats sleeping in a vertical line! Look at the crazy "face" pattern on their backs to keep predators away! It looks like a tiny, scotty-dog face!
