Biked down to Chinatown for a day of TREATIN MYSELF! Also a cool view of this very Masonic two-pillar frieze on the building across the street on the roof of the Fred F. French art deco landmark building. ("F" is the 6th letter in the alphabet. Fred F. French = F F F = 6 6 6 !) Dum-dum daaaaah! Spent the afternoon exploring the town and it's awesome adobe buildings. The conference room we were in overlooked the just-opened 9-11 Memorial. I got up early on Saturday morning and headed down to the Financial District to a free seminar I'd been invited to attend... On Tuesday night Dmitry invited me uptown to the land of glass and steel to be a guest speaker... ... and soaked up the cold, clear air and winter sun. Wandered the streets adjacent to San Ignacio's main drag. ...and a whole field of grass with light rods that projected light-rings onto the floor of the elevated building above! ...that was totally covered in plants. I love this. On the walk back to Sylvie's I passed this building... Woke up to drizzling rain on Thursday. Buildings falling apart. New building going up near Astor. The museum is located in the art deco-styled former post office of Nashville. On Monday I met up with Kim for lunch in Charlotte. First day that had a tiny bit of fall chill in the air. The Battery Maritime Building ferry terminal is really cool, though. Very 19th century! Model buildings. Heavenly hood-light. Wild. 50 storeys tall, completed in 1931. Spotted the crazy gothic rooftop of the GE Building coming back from a client on Thursday. Twilight skyline. Noticed a church with an interesting decagram window on the walk home. Went up to a fancy midtown building to meet with a new client. On Monday afternoon, I went up to midtown... What do they make here? ...free ferry that runs from southern Manhattan... ...and admired the surrounding buildings. Gothic revival? Why is there a pine cone on top ? ;) Back in Flatiron on Sunday for the last day of staffing! Brick linoleum! While heading up the East River, we passed the ruins of the Renwick Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island. Cranes! One of the Freedom Towers going up near Battery City. ...because I'd been called for Manhattan jury duty. Central Park had a lot of soothing plants and nature, so coming out onto the square lines and concrete of Fifth Avenue on a Saturday evening was a little terrifying. A little after 2pm, we walked around the corner to see if we could get in on some... I ended up getting introduced to someone there who ended up hiring me for my first major long-term project as a consultant. Let's hear it for showing up! Neato.
