The May Roundup

Here are all the photos I took in May 2012 that didn't end up in their own entry!

Tuesday, May 1st

NYC's bodegas are late-night oases of treats & fruit!
Kicked of the month properly with some Motorino Pizzas.
So good.
maddy
Foot snuggler!

Thursday, May 3rd

Bricked-up school archway on 10th Street.
Later that evening, we went over to Cynthia's apartment for...
...a BREAKFAST FOR DINNER PARTY!
amanda, astra, cynthia, katie d
So much fun.

Friday, May 4th

Watching Seinfeld from the beginning. Made it to Season 3. YOU GOTTA COME SEE THE BAY-BEE!
While out walking around, I spotted a weird flying object and filmed this video of it. (I submitted it to EVGrieve - there were Occupy Wall Street marches going on and the consensus is that I probably filmed an NYPD drone)
mike doyle, tanya, vin
Mike & Tanya were in town visiting! We went over to Royale and were soon joined by Meredith & Vin who were at a drawing class together!
vin
Meredith's sketch of Vin!

On Saturday night, I went out to meet this guy in Williamsburg for beers & pretzels.
ian c
I ran into my former co-worker Ian who was up visiting from DC!

Sunday, May 6th

LAZY SUNDAY! When timed correctly, a photo of Maddy yawning is basically Odie from Garfield. Haha.

Monday, May 7th

me, meredith
After finishing up work in the morning, I had the afternoon free. Meredith and I decided to walk up Ave C...
...and take the ferry over to Randall's Island to check out the Frieze Art Fair.
While waiting in line for the ferry, we spotted something slightly...
...disturbing. HELP ME!
All aboard!
While heading up the East River, we passed the ruins of the Renwick Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island.
Getting ready to enter the huge pavillion.
Here are some pics of things I liked!
I liked these hanging sculptures.
Especially, this one. As you approach it, you can see that the inside...
...is made of mirrors!
Whoa.
I also really liked this sculpture that was stuck to the wall and looked like it was made out of...
...80lbs of lipstick.
Lutz Bacher
Big Boy, 1992
Fabric, stuffing, fake fur, paint
114 x 46 x 24 inches
Unique
art ˆ creepy ˆ doll ˆ wtf
Also liked this rack of tape cassettes...
...that featured this portrait. (Very similar to the V/H/S movie poster that came out just a few weeks later!) Gregor Hildebrandt?
I loved these paintings which upon closer examination turned out to be...
...mostly made of BEADS!
Gorgeous.
Two motors on the floor with pieces of rotating oak tag attached...
...when they collided, they'd push each other up into the air.
Los Carpinteros
Close up.
Yarn, not paint!
Bench.
Alex Hartley
It was a long time ago, 2011.
Detail of the model boat in the foreground.
david c
The guy in this Alice Neel painting from 1971 looks just like David Cagiarri!
Back at home that evening, I had vegetarian Vietnamese from Lan Cafe for dinner. Yes!

Wednesday, May 9th

Tompkins Park afternoon dogwalk.
me
Later that afternoon, I busted out my NeuroSky BCI headset...
...and played around with a new program called Dagaz that represents your brainwaves in real time as different patterned mandalas. Neat stuff.
Had a windowsill visit from my dear friend, Mr. Moth.
Meredith went shopping for Bachelorette Party favors (I forget whose party they were for!).
She also picked up all kinds of stuff for decorating cookies!
Including a penis-shaped cookie mold that came with this incredible helpful booklet of dick-icing suggestions!
jeet
Gurj was scandalized! Hahaha.

Thursday, May 10th

There's a lady who spends her days looking for four leaf clovers in Tompkins Square park!
Brick linoleum!
I take a lot of photos to jog my memory and remind me what I was up to on that day. Sometimes though, I take photos and have NO IDEA what they are about. Like this one. Ummm, heating up some water at 6pm?
katie, meredith, siege, spencer tunick
Later that evening, we went to a gallery opening in the Lower East Side to see some of Clayton's art work. On the way out we ran into Spencer Tunick (who took a naked group portrait at Emma's birthday party in the Chinatown loft way back in 2003!

Friday, May 11th

I volunteered to help staff a weekend meditation retreat and headed over to the Shambhala Center on Friday evening...
...to meet with the other volunteers and set-up the main shrine room for the morning.

Saturday, May 12th

Back at 7am the next morning!
gurj
Later that evening, we celebrated Gurj's 30th birthday! Happy birthday, Gurjeet! Here's a 30th birthday selfie she took with my cam.
jared, maddy
She and Jared came over to hang out before heading out into the neighborhood for birthday drinks!
Meredith was at her bachelorette party, but left a note!
jeet
Gurj's birthday cookie...
jeet
...turned out to have decorative BALLS!
jeet
GURJ IS 30!
Meredith was also kind enough to leave us a second box containing all the dick-reject cookies!
ellen, jeet
Later, we headed over to B-Side to celebrate!
jared, krystyna, penta
Jay was there with his new girlfriend, Krystyna. Since then, Krystyna and her friend Corinne have started doing a really funny podcast called GUYS WE FUCKED: The Anti Slut-Shaming Podcast. They have 500k followers on SoundCloud in like 4 months! Congrats!
jeet
Foosball.
ellen, hans
The show-stealer of the evening was most definitely Hans' BRUTAL sunburn. Haha.
ellen, hans, jeet, quinn, sarah
SUPER HANS!

Sunday, May 13th

Back in Flatiron on Sunday for the last day of staffing!
Had my favorite bi bim bab lunch at Manna Express Kitchen during the break for lunch...
...and admired the surrounding buildings.
Gothic revival? Why is there a pine cone on top? ;)
Detail from 30 Rock.
Spinach burrito. Mmm.

Monday, May 14th

maddy
Watching some Monday night tv with my buddy. What a grimple!
My favorite thing about re-watching Seinfeld was spotting all the sneaky Larry David appearances!

Wednesday, May 16th

grant, meredith
On Wednesday morning Grant came back to New York. He came straight to our place and we ate bagels in the park.
Later that afternoon, I had a meeting with a new client.
Airplanes going to..
...and leaving LGA.
Wispy skies.

Thursday, May 17th

Finished my work up by 2pm and headed to Tompkins beach...
matt
...to meet up with this guy. We ended up playing frisbee in East River Park for two hours.
grant
Later that night, Grant cooked dinner.
Bruschetta and...
...fettuccine al funghi!
ellen, meredith, piper
Ellen came over to get in on the feast.
Thanks, Grant!

Friday, May 18th

siege
Friday afternoon I had lunch with Siege.
Two of my fave treats!

Saturday, May 19th

I was out running errands on Saturday and ran smack into the middle of the Dance Parade on my walk home.
Great outfits.
At the time I was obsessed with filming everything using my new camera's slow motion capture. Once of these days I'm going to edit together a video of dancing and face-shaking slowed-down goodness!
Got a new video game called Witcher 2 that had nudity in it!
Can't it believe it took this long for me to see videogame boobies!
david k, ellen, grant, jared, jeet, matt, meredith
I don't remember if there was a special occasion or if this was just a spring friend hang, but check out the solid Saturday night crew that rolled up into our place!

Dog smooch time!

Jared and I went across the street and returned triumphant with MULTIPLE dollar-pizza pies.
grant
Grant classed-up our dollar pies with some fancy hand-grated Parmesan.
ellen, grant
It makes an $8 dollar pizza taste like a $20 pizza!
ellen, grant, jeet, meredith
Silent grazing.
ellen, piper
Look at that smile! So full of pizza and happiness and getting ready to nap out on a dog-pillow!

Sunday, May 20th

grant, meredith
On Sunday morning I went running with Grant. He slowed down considerably to accommodate my beginner's pace.
Running errands around the neighborhood caught this guy snoozing in front of his garage sale.
Electronics for sale.
maddy, meredith
Sun snoozers.

Monday, May 21st

grant, maddy
Morning coffee with my buddies.
me
With Grant temporarily staying in the home office, I moved my computer into our bedroom so that I'd have a quiet place to get some work done for the remainder of Grant's stay.

Tuesday, May 22nd

Yes.

Thursday, May 24th

grant, nanny pam
On Thursday morning we had a Facetime video chat...
nanny pam
...with Grant's Nanny Pam!
Then later that night, I went to the Landmark to see the outstanding Norwegian movie, Headhunters with Grant, Clayton and Katie. Definitely worth seeing. The movie got out just in time to...
amanda, grant, meredith
...head to a bar right down the street to meet up with these two to see..
...Frank's gig with, Led Blimpie, a really, really good Led Zep tribute band.
frank
I expected Frank to be on kit, but we showed up to find him on the keys instead! Always impressed either way.
I spent the rest of the evening reading on the internet. Wikipedia does an impressive job summarizing really complicated things. Simulacra and Simulation blew my tiny mind. Required reading for armchair ontologists!

Friday, May 25th

amanda, david k, grant
Afternoon ice cream at Lula's! (Bonus points for the the thumbs up from a stranger in the background. Haha)

hans
Hans' brother Ulie was in town from Germany and wanted to see Rockaway Beach.
Skate park.
Excellent day at the beach. After we'd gotten our fill of swimming...
...we drove over to Jacob Riis so Ulie could see the more remote areas of the island.
hans, ulie
Brothers!
meredith
Treedith.
hans, meredith, ulie
We walked all the way over to Fort Tilden beach and checked out the sandy pathways...
...and the pillbox bunker!
ulie
All tuckered out for the drive home.
Lots of little things for dinner!

Monday, May 28th

Baby pigeon, no! Spring time in NYC mean baby pigeons falling out of their nests onto the sidewalks all the time.

Tuesday, May 29th

grant, vin
On Tuesday afternoon, Grant and I met up with Vin to grab lunch and get some papers notarized.
maddy
I spent the rest of the day reading with my buddy.
maddy, me
Maddy likes to nuzzle up in your nooks.
East Village twilight.

Wednesday, May 30th

Afternoon skies over Flatiron.
Later that evening, I went to Meditation in Everyday Life, a weekly class at Shambhala.
The class put me in just the right frame of mind to watch Total Recall with Grant when I got home. Haha.
"Here is the plan: get your ass to Maas."
