rockaway beach

rockaway beach
Beach buddies.
rockaway beach
Grabbed lunch at Rippers...Grant brought his own fancy gym diet meal.
rockaway beach
She took this group photo of us all!
rockaway beach
On Sunday a bunch of us met up at Rockaway.
rockaway beach
The beach was crowded on a weekend and we had to wait in line a bit...
rockaway beach
Excellent day at the beach!
rockaway beach
Caught the ferry back around 5pm
rockaway beach
Post-beach smiles!
rockaway beach
New boardwalk and beach ramps they put in after Hurricane Sandy looks nice.
rockaway beach
...and then we hit the beach! They are planting new dune grass.
rockaway beach
Sky cleared up and we got a few hours of sunshine!
rockaway beach
One for the books, for sure!
rockaway beach
Solid day, party brahs.
rockaway beach
Excellent Rockaway Beach Saturday!
rockaway beach
rockaway beach
Beach day!
rockaway beach
...and Juliette.
rockaway beach
...we headed out to Rockaway Beach.
rockaway beach
All beached out.
rockaway beach
Franz!
rockaway beach
On Saturday afternoon I went out to Rockaway Beach to celebrate Amanda's birthday!
rockaway beach
Beach birthdays are the best!
rockaway beach
rockaway beach
Long boardwalk walk back.
rockaway beach
Frozen drinks on the beach 4 life, son.
rockaway beach
Bird shitting on your arm is good luck for sure.
rockaway beach
Hit the sand by 11am!
rockaway beach
Subway squintin.
rockaway beach
Cool houses on piers on the edge of Howard Beach.
rockaway beach
Ain't nothing like the beach on a weekday!
rockaway beach
Amanda, Leigh & Kim all have the same birthday! This mega-birthday extravaganza kicked off with Amanda's birthday out at Rockaway! Here's the birthday girl along with fellow beach heartbreakers, Naomi & Astra.
rockaway beach
Got to see this guy (whose birthday is just 4 days later!)
rockaway beach
Happy birthday, Amanda!
rockaway beach
Beach picnic!
rockaway beach
...before catching the subway home. Awesome beach day, guys!
rockaway beach
Stopped off to smash a few slices...
rockaway beach
Bury me, underneath.
rockaway beach
Visor tastic.
rockaway beach
They are tiny and devastating. It's always a good idea to split it with a few people because you really have no idea how much alcohol is even in the thing. Probably not enough to kill four adults, right? Of course not, that's why you split it up!
rockaway beach
Right when we were about to get another round of Pina Coladas, someone walked by us on the beach selling especially potent locally-made alcoholic beach drinks called which are colloquially called Nutcrackers!
rockaway beach
Saturday for the books! Biked down to meet Grant and get breakfast sandwiches at Dimes. Penny and Jared came to meet us...
rockaway beach
The best.
rockaway beach
...and we got frozen pina coladas from Connolly's!
rockaway beach
...to up our beach-pose ante. (Hat-hold and tricep-flexdown FOR THE WIN!)
rockaway beach
Later in the afternoon, we met up with Matt and a friend of his (who had the best Bay Watch-ish one piece!) and their beach picture was so good that it forced Grant and I...
rockaway beach
It was the first time I'd been out to Far Rock since Hurricane Sandy. Crazy to see that the entire boardwalk was completely gone and they had up fencing everywhere.
rockaway beach
Hazy-white summer afternoon.
rockaway beach
rockaway beach
Boarders.
rockaway beach
...the post office to meet with Jeff.
rockaway beach
I downloaded the pics as soon as I got home and put together some edits. (Which is a big deal. Usually, it takes me around three years to post the photos I take online!). Thanks again to Jeff for having me along!
rockaway beach
Walked back over to...
rockaway beach
Boardwalkless.
rockaway beach
Where the boardwalk ends.
rockaway beach
Shifted and opened like a zipper.
rockaway beach
These big trucks were all over the place hauling sand.
rockaway beach
Better luck next cove.
rockaway beach
Painting on the boardwalk.
rockaway beach
Strong onshore.
rockaway beach
JFK bound.
rockaway beach
The cement supports are the only thing left. The boardwalk was all washed away here.
rockaway beach
In the midst of the all the chaos, nice to see people still surfing.
rockaway beach
#3 GO ROMNEY. OR NO USA
rockaway beach
What's left of the skate park.
rockaway beach
rockaway beach
We headed over to another big...
rockaway beach
We walked in from the beach, hopped back in the car.
rockaway beach
rockaway beach
The entire boardwalk was washed away except where the light pole is screwed in. Similarly...
rockaway beach
Absurd.
rockaway beach
rockaway beach
These guys were using calling cards to get in touch with relatives overseas.
rockaway beach
...this section of destroyed boardwalk still contained a working payphone.
rockaway beach
South near the waterline. Hard to get a sense of where you are without the boardwalk around as a reference.
rockaway beach
Sections of destroyed boardwalk stacked.
rockaway beach
Carting sand back to the beach one wheelbarrow at a time.
rockaway beach
Oh, Beach 113 Street. That's very helpful.
rockaway beach
Jeff on the move!
rockaway beach
Looking north.
rockaway beach
Far-as-the-eye-can-see gone. This wasn't a little boardwalk, either. It was 52 blocks long!
rockaway beach
...and then realized the entire boardwalk was gone.
rockaway beach
We parked to take a look at the beach and boardwalk...
rockaway beach
A few weeks after the storm...
rockaway beach
Big panels.
rockaway beach
Veggie Island!
rockaway beach
On our way.
rockaway beach
Waiting for Hans & Ellen to park the car.
rockaway beach
Beach 86.
rockaway beach
Po-po beach cruiser and no waves.
rockaway beach
rockaway beach
rockaway beach
Hard to tell from this photo, but in-person you can see the Manhattan skyline from Rockaway.
rockaway beach
rockaway beach
Excellent day at the beach. After we'd gotten our fill of swimming...
rockaway beach
Skate park.
rockaway beach
Hans' brother Ulie was in town from Germany and wanted to see Rockaway Beach.
rockaway beach
I couldn't fit my bike into the car, so I had to come all the way back out to pick it up...
rockaway beach
Later that afternoon, we hit the beach again. Parts of the boardwalk had been pretty badly damaged by the storm (but nothing compared with what Sandy would do 13 months later).
rockaway beach
Ahhh, scenic Rockaway.
rockaway beach
Before we had to the airport, I hit the beach to try to get some of the pre-Hurricane Irene waves that were starting to roll in.
