surf
Steve went surfing for a bit.
surf
...and that it probably didn't make sense for me to keep a giant surfboard in my tiny Manhattan apartment anymore. I took some photos of this beauty so I could give her away to a good home. (Craig came and got her!)
surf
On Monday I finally came to terms with the fact that SIX YEARS had passed since my surfing summer of 2011...
surf
Was feeling really restless and unhappy and unsure what needed to change. Trying to not change anything or make a plan and just sit with the uncomfortable feelings. Tried to de-clutter my apartment....
surf
On Sunday I decided that after two whole years of not-surfing, I could no longer justify keeping a surfboard in a Manhattan apartment. Craig came over to pick it up!
surf
Later that afternoon, I met Catrinel out in BK and we loaded up for the beach!
surf
Surfboards on top, just in case!
surf
These big trucks were all over the place hauling sand.
surf
Better luck next cove.
surf
Strong onshore.
surf
In the midst of the all the chaos, nice to see people still surfing.
surf
...walked around the corner to Hans' place to catch a ride to Rockaway beach. Hans is an excellent surfboard-stacker.
surf
Excellent day at the beach. After we'd gotten our fill of swimming...
surf
Hans' brother Ulie was in town from Germany and wanted to see Rockaway Beach.
surf
They caught wave after perfect wave.
surf
Ouch.
surf
Three.
surf
Two.
surf
The wave there is SO FAST. Here's another three-second sequence.
surf
There wasn't anyone else in the line up.
surf
Gove came out to join the party a little late...
surf
...three!
surf
...two...
surf
Three second sequence: One...
surf
Chris!
surf
...or that way.
surf
This way...
surf
Steve making it look deceptively easy.
surf
...but managed to prove his brain hadn't been damaged too badly the day before.
surf
Six foot wave in ankle-deep water.
surf
Saturday was our last day in the beach house.

surf
Great logo.
surf
Also, because you're so far off shore, when you catch a wave, you can ride it a looooong time.
surf
Superman ejection! I got sweaty palms just watching them.
surf
...but when it was, it was BIG.
surf
The waves isn't as consistent or well-formed as Colorado...
surf
I couldn't even comprehend paddling that far out into waves this big. Look what you have to go through - and if you get pummeled, you can't go anywhere because land is VERY far away.
surf
...this time at Panga Drops: a deep water break about 500 yards off shore. Here's a photo of Steve getting close to the wave after about five solid minutes of paddling.
surf
Later that afternoon, Chris and Steve decided to go for a second session...
surf
...they called it quits...
surf
A little before noon...
surf
I watched for a little more than an hour (and they'd already been in there an hour before I got there!).
surf
The wave closes out really quickly. Check out the height of the white water on the right.
surf
Steve about to get barreled.
surf
I brought my camera and not my board. Haha. Here's a photo to give you an idea of how close the break is to the beach.
surf
People who are good enough to surf this wave make it look SO EASY.
surf
Barreled.
surf
And here's Steve surfing a wave that hopefully explains why I nearly soiled my boardshorts when I found myself on the other side of it. Surfing East Coast waves that are 5 or 6 feet is no big deal. This, however, was a whole different animal.
surf
...that you have to know the right time to eject, lest you find yourself getting pummeled by that wave in about a foot and a half of water.
surf
Even the smaller waves were so fast...
surf
...and then walked south down the beach back to watch the guys surf Colorado again!
surf
After getting settled into the house, later that night we went to Don Eloy's...
surf
...rent boards for the week!

surf
Hmmmm...somehow this made more sense out in Rockaway. Did a whole bunch of Yipit work from my home office...
surf
...watched the surfers for a bit and then we loaded up a car service car with all of our gear and headed back home to the East Village!
surf
Before we had to the airport, I hit the beach to try to get some of the pre-Hurricane Irene waves that were starting to roll in.
surf
Not too shabby.
surf
Our landlord didn't like that we were using his scaffolding as our drying rack. Wah wah.
surf
On Sunday, Catrinel's friends came out to surf!
surf
We hit the beach early on Saturday.
surf
Here's me a few hours later after my new board clocked me in the face. I buried my nose, went over the front of the board, and when I came up for air, the edge of my board bonked me in the forehead right above my left eye and the sharp-edge of one of the fins when into the meat of my nose where the bridge meets the brow. I saw stars and had those few moments where I was afraid to take my hand away from my face because I was expecting a lot of blood. All things considered, I got off relatively unscathed!
surf
I'd been renting longboards for most of the summer, but for the last few days I'd been trying out a used shortboard (6' 4") that was for sale trying to decide if I should buy it.
surf
Quiet lineup!
surf
Gah! (Rockaway had all these great wheatpaste posters of surfing pics all over the neighborhood taken by Reid van Renesse).
surf
We rented longboards...
surf
...we hit the beach for a bit! (Not much going on).
surf
Awesome gardens on the walk to the water.
surf
But after a jumpstart-recharge, we made it all the way out to Long Beach before 12:30!
surf
We stayed until 6pm and then decided to...
surf
Love these two.
surf
The water was totally flat all day, so we did lotsa paddling around.
surf
We rented two longboards at Boarders...
surf
Here, I'll hold them in place with my head!
surf
Who needs a roof rack when you've got a mom-van?
surf
...for some longer, wave-appropriate boards to arrive.
surf
...but they're ridable if you've got enough board under you!
surf
The waves aren't big...
surf
Marcello & Meredith
surf
Unloading zone.
surf
Why get a surf rack when you can just put it in?
surf
...and we all headed back to the beach!
surf
On Tuesday morning I got a text from Cat about going surfing again! Meredith and headed out to Brooklyn and met up with Cat & Dom...
surf
One of my favoritest 4ths.
surf
All loaded up and ready to head home.
surf
Surfboard jigsaw
surf
Pretty nice little Monday.
surf
...you catch ankle-biters all day long.
surf
Small waves + holiday = not very crowded.
surf
Long boards help...
surf
Woke up early to catch one last tide before flying home.

All done with that for now!
surf
Meredith's last day of surfing!
surf
Low tide.
surf
Around 1pm, we walked back across the peninsula to the estuary to catch a boat ride back to our car.

surf
We got a few hours in during the early morning, but around 10:30, a few really big big waves (double-overheads!) started coming in.
surf
That waterproof sunblock really brings out my eyes.
surf
Shelter!
