The February Roundup

Here are all the pics I took in February 2015 that didn't go in their own entry!

Sunday, February 1st

Spent the afternoon playing around with my Kasina Mind Machine
It uses strobing lights that are synched with binaural-beat music in order to case different states of NEURAL ENTRAINMENT.
I also decided to clean that very very old bronze casting I bought...
...with a mix of baking soda and lemon juice.
Rubbed the paste all over and let it sit!
Later that evening, I went over to Sarah's...
...to watch the Superbowl.

Which is always just an excuse to hang...
apt 3a ˆ ellen ˆ hans ˆ jared ˆ jeet ˆ karen
...because there aren't a lot of sports fan in this audience.
Got home to discover the acidic paste i'd made had eaten through the bronze patina that had formed over hundreds (possibly a thousand years).

Monday, February 2nd

Cleaned my apartment on Monday afternoon...
...and hid out from the snow!
With the patina almost completely removed from my casting...

...I discovered there was some writing etched into the back!
It's hard to make out! I posted some pics to a few internet forums and heard that the language is most likely a form of seal script that pre-dates modern written Chinese!
I thought it might be a few hundred years old, but was shocked to learn it could be as old as from 300 BC. Whaaaaat? I also learned that you're never supposed to clean the patina off an antique because they have trouble dating it. Oh well!
The cleaning also revealed a lot more of the details. Like this court-jester looking guy playing some kind of stringed lute-looking instrument.
And this choir of monks.
It shows a bodhisattva sitting on the backs of two dragons.

Here are some more pics of the mysterious writing on the back!

Tuesday, February 3rd

On Tuesday, I went to visit Ammon at Everplans. I didn't end up working with them at all, but they introduced me to LeagueApps who became a client of mine for several years!
Walked by La Plaza and they had some kind of ice sculpting event going on!
Stopped off and picked up some snacks and drinks on my way over to...
...Ellen & Hans apartment to celebrate...
ellen, hans, sarah
...Sarah's birthday!

Tuesday, February 10th

Got some fun geometry toys. Fractiles magnets...
And a giant set of ZomeTools.
Very cool modeling kit that lets you make all sorts of crystalline structures that appear in nature.
A tesseract...
...is a hypercube.
The Flower of Life is a lot more than a neato design. It hints at the underlying structure of Plank space!
Fun to have a way to take my 2D drawings and try to figure out the 3-dimensional objects they are projections of!
Fun to just keep adding sticks to the balls...
...and see where the vertices lead you!
fatty, grant
Later that evening, Grant and Fatty came by and we bundled up to head out for...
...an Indian feast at Mitali.
fatty
Uhhh, glass of Merlot?

Took Maddy for a nice long, wintery walk...
...crunching around in the show at East River Park
You know, listening to podcasts...
Home haircut!
Then spent the afternoon with some new books! This excellent I Ching workbook...
...is to help you keep track of the frequency of the different hexagrams you cast.
After throwing some coins, I settled in to read the excellent and highly recommended Emergence by Barbara Marx Hubbard
Blueberry and Blackberry juice in equal parts...
...Black & Blue Juice!

grant
After the movie, we headed up to Siege's photo studio to look at photos from Grant's vasectomy.
grant
Siege wasn't shy with his lens...
grant
...and managed to catch some pretty gnarly, ballbag-clipping pics!
grant
Thirty seconds of pain instead of eighteen years of anguish!
