The October Roundup

Here are all the photos I took in October of 2013 that didn't end up in their own entry.

Sunday, September 29th

amanda, grant
A little bit of bleed-over from the end of September! On Sunday night, Grant, Amanda & Mer came over to watch the finale of Breaking Bad followed by the premiere of Eastbound & Down.

My brother was up in NYC for a work conference and crashed at my place instead of a hotel.

Wednesday, October 2nd

theresa
On Wednesday afternoon, I took delivery of three awesome paintings by Theresa Byrnes
theresa
Did a little bit of measuring, and found a nice spot for them...
theresa
...in the living room!
brett, grant
Went out to Motorino for pizza with these two...
...and then had ourselves a Big Gay Icecream in the park.

Thursday, October 3rd

maddy
Grant came over in the morning and rescued me...
...from working on a really long presentation for a client!
john roche, me
Later that night, I met up with John and we took a cab over to...
adam curtis
... the Armory to see a collaboration between the band Massive Attack, and the excellent documentarian, Adam Curtis.
adam curtis
The show was called MASSIVE ATTACK VS ADAM CURTIS and it was really strange and intense. The show took place in a room surrounded by huge screens.
adam curtis
Here's a view of the "room of screens" from the outside when I was coming back from a trip to the bathroom.
adam curtis
Towards the end, the screen raised and the band was there.

john roche, mara a
We ran into Mara and her friends on the way out.
Left feeling like I'd been arted.
Incidentally, there's a new Phatasm-inspired Massive Attack video that just came out and it's fun and disturbing. Really stuck with me.

Friday, October 4th

On Friday night I went to a house party down in Chinatown.
I wandered around feeling a million years old and...
...this was the most familiar face I saw.

Saturday, October 5th

amanda, fatty, grant, marina
On Saturday afternoon, me, Amanda & Grant met up with a very pregnant Marina & Fatty for breakfast!
amanda, fatty, grant, marina
Marina's comedy preggo-belly! (Grant's expression in the background!)
amanda, fatty, grant, marina
We had homemade hot doughnuts out back at Back Forty.
A leaf fell off a tree and floated down to land in my empty cup. This is luckier than when a pigeon shits on you, right?

Thursday, October 10th

john roche, me
On Thursday evening John came over and I did reiki on him.
alexandra, amanda, grant
Later that evening I biked over to the LES to meet up with Amanda, Grant and his friend Alexandra that was in town from Texas.

Friday, October 11th

erika, scott
Scott & Erika were in town on Friday night and came out to the East Village for a late night hang before heading home.

Saturday, October 12th

I was supposed to volunteer helping out with a meditation weekend at Shambhala, but they called to say they had too many people booked and I suddenly had a free weekend on my hands. Cleaned my apt!
me
Jumped rope and took my fitness progress photos (don't worry - I give up on this soon enough!)
maddy
Maddy was hiding out in her crate most of the day because she hurt her back jumping down off my couch!
Went to the park to eat bagels with Grant. Watched a group of people do acro together!
So fun to watch them!
Every time I thought someone was about to get a broken neck, they'd swing into a new position and everything was fine.
gurj, jared
Newlyweds (!!!) Jared and Jeet came over later in the evening for a Vietnamese sandwich feast!

Monday, October 14th

Sunny Monday.
maddy
Maddy's back was still really hurting and my vet referred me to a holistic vet in Chelsea who does animal chiropractic and cold-laser treatments. I was skeptical, but Maddy who'd been quivering in pain for 3 days, started wagging her tail after a few minutes of her first laser treatment.
She also got some steroids to help with the inflammation.
maddy
Resting up at home. I got a real hurt back, dad.

Tuesday, October 15th

Brought my bike inside on Tuesday evening to clean my gunky chain.
Blech! So much crustiness!
Look, you can actually see the gears again!
Ugly, paper-looking flower growing out of the sidewalk.
miye
Miye came over for a visit...
maddy
...and chased this muppet around the apartment.

Wednesday, October 16th

Cool architectural building detail.

Thursday, October 17th

ellen, me
Ellen came over for a hang and I congratulated her on her recent departure from the New York Times with this...
We got veggie sandwiches from Tiny's and watched Eastbound & Down.
maddy
Such an excellent knee-napper.
maddy
Kissed my convalescent
And spent the rest of my evening enjoying my recently-arrived late-night impulse purchase, INCENSE OF THE WEST!
Awwww, yeah! Check out that assortment of western woods.

Friday, October 18th

grant
Grant came by on Friday morning after his run. We continued our tradition where he brings me a coffee...
grant
...and then treats me to a medley of Iron Maiden...
grant
...and AC/DC songs on the guitar.
maddy
Lazy afternoon.
jeet
Gurj texted me out of the blue asking me if I wanted to grab some pizza...
...and then head over to the Barclay's center to see Pearl Jam!
jeet, me
She'd gotten some last minute tix through work.
best ˆ excited ˆ jeet ˆ me
These were our original seats, but right when we got there, Gurj got a text from work people who told us to come meet them at their...
...even better seats!
I didn't realize how many Pearl Jam songs I still knew!
Awesome to see musicians you grew up with and see that they're still going at it as hard as when you originally heard about then over 20 years ago.
Their set had all of these light-up hanging chandeliers...
...which Eddie climbed onto and used to swing out...
...over the crowd while singing.
Pretty great.

Sunday, October 20th

Stayed up late working on this website and published 6 new entries bringing the total photo count to this site over the 30,000 mark! Went to Odessa for a booky breakfast.
Grill cheese, french fry, spinach salad combo!

Monday, October 21st

Worked from home on Monday afternoon.
Biked over to Tribecca in the afternoon to meet with a client in person.
christina l, jared, jeet, karen, quinn, sarah
Later that night I biked to the Coffee Shop in Union Square to have a pre-show dinner with Christina, Sarah, Quinn, Gurj & Karen before walking over to...
...The Gramercy Theater to see Jared play a show...
...303 (which is the Denver area code).
jeet, me
Me and Jeet.
jeet ˆ me
Always so awesome to see people you know entertain a big crowd.
jared
Jared & Jesse.
I love how all shows go from this...
...to this within minutes of ending.
christina l, jared, jeet, karen, quinn
Hung out with these guys afterwards.

Wednesday, October 23rd

Awww yeah, bachelor cooking! Big salad, giant piece of bread, homemade juice, served with a block of cheddar to taste.
maddy
Not impressed.
Later that evening, I took the subway out to Williamsburg...
caiti
...to stop by Kai's 30th birthday party.
Neato, rainbow light-mat on the bathroom ceiling
kai
Happy birthday, Kai!
caiti, kai
Two innings down!

Thursday, October 24th

Camera when off by while I was cleaning the screen and I liked it.
me
Sun spot selfie.
I took Maddy for an evening walk through the park and on the way home spotted...
...this huge pile of early 80s records that someone had put out to the curb. They all had really excellent...
...but also terrible album art. Stripey hair FTW!
I was especially found of this Kenny Loggins Nightwatch album that featured...
...this creepster shy guy who is...uh....floating in the air outside the window?
the ktb
Later that night I went to meet KTB and Kelly who were in the neighborhood...
the ktb
...celebrating their friends' birthday!

Saturday, October 26th

Murdered out Magnum in the hood. Darth Vader's grocery wagon!
me, miye
Hung out with Miye on Saturday.
miye
We took Maddy exploring through the garden across the street...
...and checked out all of the Halloween decorations that they'd put up along the sidewalk.
maddy, miye
Dachshund infestation!

Monday, October 28th

On Monday I took Maddy back to the vet for a few more cold laser treatments.
maddy
I have had my doctor friends tell me that cold lasers are placebo and don't do anything - but they really seemed to help Maddy's back injury heal quickly and I'm glad I didn't send her in for back surgery!
Speaking of fringe science, I spent a better part of the rest of the evening trying to use my mind to spin this tiny paper umbrella underneath a wind shield.
If you don't seriously try to use you telekinetic powers how will you know you don't have them?

Tuesday, October 29th

On Tuesday afternoon I went out to Williamsburg to take pictures of my friend & neighbor Danny recording a movie score with a live orchestra!
Spotted this awesome new Buff Monster mural on my walk over.
Also admired this neat router-etched plywood (stencil?) what was right near the studio
View from the side so you can see that each design was deeply etched into the plywood.
Neato.
danny bensi
Danny lives down the street from me in the East Village. I met him back in October of 2004 when I was living out in San Francisco and a buddy told me I should go see his band. I arrived at the studio and found Danny busy...
...organizer music for all the various orchestra parts!
danny bensi
It was awesome to be in the live room...
danny bensi
...with so much sound bouncing around.
danny bensi
After a few run throughs with the orchestra...
danny bensi
...the director (or maybe the writer?) of the film they were scoring came into the live room to listen...
danny bensi
...and to talk to the musicians...
danny bensi
...about the part of the movie they were creating music for.
danny bensi
Very cool to get to be a...
danny bensi
...fly on the wall for this!
Here are a bunch...
danny bensi
...of the various pics I snapped of...
danny bensi
...Danny and his writing partner Saunder Jurriaans...
danny bensi
...in the control room listening to what they'd just recorded.
danny bensi
...Danny conducting in the live room.
Made it back home by the early afternoon. Ivy on the fence changing colors...
...along with the trees in Tompkins. We usually only get a few days of fall colors before everything turns brown.
On the walk through Tompkins Square park there was all sorts of a movie lighting gear everywhere.
Dog park filth print!
On the walk home through the park, I had to stop and wait for them to finish filming a scene...
...starring Heather Graham. Some basic internet sleuthing revealed this is a movie called My Dead Boyfriend, to be released later this year (2016).

Wednesday, October 30th

Post-work lunch at Odessa on Wednesday.
Walked home through the park and checked out another big, weird movie set they'd put up...
...to film another scene with Heather Graham.
I brought home a new bag of treats from the pet shop and Maddy was very interested! Turns out she was really into...
...the secret ingredient!
I'd been toying with the idea of giving away my television for years, but it was easier to talk about than to actually do. As soon as I'd be ready to give it away, there'd always be a new show to watch. Eventually, my neighbor mentioned she needed a TV at her art gallery to display movies and it seemed like a good-enough cause to finally justify parting ways
Goodbye old friend! Thanks for all the shows!
Picture of my living room, sans television, for the first time!
Like a missing tooth, the gap has since filled in, but my tongue still pokes around in there.
me
Giving away your stuff is never as terrible as you think it's going to be!

Thursday, October 31st

On Thursday, biking over to ShopKeep's offices near the Holland Tunnel, I had to figure out to cross the Halloween Parade route!
Army of NYPD gathering in prep for the parade.
Orange tree leaves...
...and this little dude hiding out.
Biking home through the East Village...
...I spotted this excellent pigeon costume complete with spoofed NYC Parks & Rec sign!
Investigated the neighborhood gardens that were open...
maddy
...with my terrifying pack of Halloween Hell Hounds!
Happy October 2013!
