The October Roundup

Here are all the photos I took in October 2010 that didn't end up in their own entry.

Saturday, October 2nd

I was out walking Maddy when I spotted a livery car with an awesomely confusing license plate.
If they make a mistake with your license plate number, the ticket doesn't stick! Haha. Good luck with this one!
I like shoes that you can send to the laundromat! They look almost new.
Later that Saturday afternoon, Meredith and I had to go out to Brooklyn to attend Marina & Fatty's baby shower. We decided to walk it. Down Ave C to Pitt Street.
Bonus street carnival.
Down to Bowery and over...
meredith
...the Manhattan Bridge.
Peeping down into Chinatown.
Long walk up.
I love this view.
Graffiti and laundry.
When we got to the Brooklyn side, we stumbled upon...
...a wedding photo shoot.
meredith
Almost there.

Shout at the Devil onesie! Haha.
As an activity, they had all the guests create a custom onesie.
marina
There was also a NASTY MAGIC onesie in the mix!
meredith
Meredith made a BIG CHEESE...
meredith
...complete with a rat on the front.
meredith
Adding it to the clothesline.
My personal fave was sparkle vest and hairy baby chest.
ellen
After the shower, a bunch of us came back to our apartment...
amanda, katie, siege
...and we played a card game...
called Apples to Apples.
amanda
There was also pizza. Mmmmm.

Sunday, October 3rd

maddy
Only October and this one already has to wear clothes outdoors. Pathetic.
When the berries come off..
..the little berry holders are revealed to be flowers.
Sunny living room.
When we got one of those Sodastream machines, Mer got a little overzealous in her estimation of how much "flavor" we'd need. Haha.

Tuesday, October 5th

On Tuesday night I went over to Apartment 3A for a homecooked meal.
catrinel, katie d
Later that night I went out to Brooklyn for drinks.

Wednesday, October 6th

On Wednesday evening, Meredith and I received an email confirming that we'd been selected as contestants to appear on The Newlywed Game!
We had never really seen the show, so we DVRed a bunch of episodes and took notes about the kinds of questions they ask!

Saturday, October 9th

Office.
October means the beginning of Oktoberfest at Zum Schneider.
On our walk west to get something to eat, we had to wade through this Broseph line up.
Went to Hummus Place on St. Marks for a light lunch!
meredith
Mint tea!
Sheen Brothers (on 10th & B) is my favorite Bodega. I like their mirror-backed produce shelves.
Healthy choices.

Sunday, October 10th

maddy
When it starts to get chilly Maddy refuses her morning walk. "No, thanks. I'll just stay here in my vest nest."
meredith
Forced walk at 2:30pm.
Afterwards, Mer and I went to Odessa for Sunday diner breakfast!
Blueberry muffin, cut in half and warmed on the griddle. Oh my.
Josh gave this to me after he'd finished reading it on our long weekend out in the not-Hamptons and I couldn't put it down. Soooo good.
Still pretty out.
Neighbors got new flower window boxes.
Later that night I went out to dinner with Siege and Dwight in Williamsburg.
New high-rise condo building going up on their corner.
Their new local pizza place is the jam.
Dwight and his boyfriend has an all-black bathroom with matching HIS and HIS urinals. So awesome.

Tuesday, October 12th

meredith
After work on Tuesday, I met Meredith at Penn Station...
...and we took the train out to Nassau Coliseum...
...to see Roger Waters perform The Wall.
I was a HUGE Pink Floyd and Roger Waters fan when I was younger and this was the first time I ever got to see him in concert.
The production was incredible. Complete with thirty-foot tall marionettes!
And a huge wall that they built up brick by brick. As the show progressed, the wall got larger and turned into a giant back-drop projection screen.
Slots would open up in the wall revealing little mini sets that Roger would sing in. Wonderful.
There were rumors that David Gilmore was going to turn up and play a show, but he didn't show up at ours.
Pig blimp.
Goodbye cruel world.
As we were walking out of the stadium to catch a cab to the train, a helicopter appeared out of nowhere and quickly landed. As soon as it touched down, Roger came out of a side door of the stadium, ran across the parking lot into the helicopter and it lifted up as soon as he was in it. Pretty stellar exit.
me, meredith
Back at home, we celebrated with Nutty Buddies...
...YES!...
...and science TV shows showing reconstructions of aquatic dinosaurs! Ten out of ten as far as days go.

Wednesday, October 13th

Noticed that the leaves across the street are just starting to change color on my walk to work in the morning.
meredith
Later that night...
...Meredith cooked an Indian feast!
Oh yes.
ellen, maddy, meredith, piper
Later that evening, Ellen came over for a hang. We fed her lots of home cooked food and then settled in for...
...some Tracy Morgan hosting Scare Tactics!

Wednesday, October 13th

meredith
Someone fell asleep on the couch. Wakey, wakey!
I came home from work to a delicious dinner of pizza rolls, salad and homemade CHEESECAKE CUPCAKES!
ellen, meredith
Ellen came over later that night to hang (and to help eat the cupcakes!).

Thursday, October 14th

maddy
Maddy bidding me farewell on my way to work in the morning.
mark d, patrick k
I arrived at the office to find Patrick all dressed up in preparation for taking his girlfriend out to dinner and proposing marriage after work! Eeeek! Congrats, Pat!
I left work a little early and biked down to NYU's ITP program to see...
...Douglas Rushkoff give a lecture about his new book (which I highly recommend) Program or Be Programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age (He makes the argument that basic literacy always includes the ability to READ and WRITE. Most people that use computers are only HALF literate in that they know how to use computers (READ ability) but they don't know how to program them (WRITE ability). Those who have trouble understanding how programs work are less likely to notice that their reality is being mediated by programs that limit their choices to things that are included in the program...)
jeet
Later that evening, Gurj came over and we played with a bunch of Brian Eno-designed music-making apps on the iPad.
jeet
Making musik, I does it!

On Monday we had Bruno and Spike over!
On my walk through Flatiron that afternoon to pick up lunch. Building fucking.
Reflection penetration.
Had me a veggie banh me sandwich for lunch.

Later that afternoon I went up to MTV to catch up with Ross Martin. Check out the view on Ross!
kristen t, maddy, miye
Later that night Miye and Kristen came by and took turns receiving hound love.
kristen t, maddy, miye
Now your turn.
me
Later on that evening I busied myself creating various hook-like tools to unclog the vacuum cleaner. Blech!
meredith
Jaffles! When Meredith's driving on Netflix...
...you're probably going to be watching a B-movie!

Saturday, October 23rd

me, meredith
On Saturday afternoon we walked a block over to Tompkins Square Park...
maddy
...to go to the Halloween Dog Parade. Meredith sewed Maddy this "bug" outfit.
Our beloved, trash-decorated 9th St fence.
We ran into two other winged-dogs on the short walk!
Costume convention.
leigh, ryan m
In other homemade costume news, Ryan and Leigh were there...
leigh
...with EDIE AS A CAN OF DIET COKE!
leigh, meredith
Costume buddies.
me
Edie's cheeks were getting smooshed by her spandex headpiece. Haha.
edie ˆ sad ˆ me
ryan m
At 1pm, Edie's number was called and Ryan took her on her costume parade lap.
maddy, meredith
We packed up our bug and headed home.
Not before admiring these two helmeted cuties on the way out. Awwww.
Later that afternoon we took a taxi...
...up the FDR...
meredith
...and over to the theater district...
dad, mom
...to meet up with my parents. They were coming into town and wanted to see a Broadway show, so we got tickets to see Billy Elliot. My mom was super excited because...
...Meredith had picked tickets that were really close to the stage and she'd never sat close to the stage! It was bananas to get to see all the dancers' footwork up close.
dad, me, meredith

Bug / Dad reunion.
sarah
Later that night Sarah came over bearing crazy juice.
me
I think I've seen something like this before. Different drank, same krunky flavor (and head-sized cans).
We watched Dexer.
sarah
Seeing Sarah manage to fall asleep despite drinking 64 ounzes of something with the word LOCO on it was impressive!

Sunday, October 24th

On Sunday afternoon I admired Manhattan's changing leaves in all their monotone-glory...
meredith
...on the way to Quantum Leap in the East Village for lunch.
Then we walked all the way over to the west side to check out The Highline for the first time.
Neat clouds. New York is neat because sometimes visiting another neighborhood you haven't been to in a while feels like you're visiting a whole other city.
The High Line is really neat. It's an old elevated subway platform turned into a public park. "The vegetation was chosen to pay homage to the wild plants that had colonized the abandoned railway before it was repurposed."
"The vegetation was chosen to pay homage to the wild plants that had colonized the abandoned railway before it was repurposed." (see also hyperreality)

Neato cut-out lines up with all the buildings if you use the eye piece to stand in just the right spot.
Night walk.

Monday, October 25th

maddy
Doesn't even get out of bed in the morning when I leave.
meredith
On Monday night Mer borrowed Sarah's bike...
...and we went for a bike ride in East River Park.
Made it to the Brooklyn Bridge before turning around.
Potato pancakes!
