The Story of Anvil Movie Premiere

In April of 2009, Sarah was promoting a new documentary about Anvil, a Canadian heavy-metal band who inspired huge acts like Metallica, but never really had much success. The last time Sarah invited me to a movie premiere, I got to meet Neil Patrick Harris AND Keanu Reeves, so I was in.

Monday, April 6th

They were showing the movie at the Blender Theater right down the street from my office.

Yes!

The movie screen was in front of the stage. At the conclusion of the film, Anvil was going to perform.

Sacha Gervasi, the director of the movie came out and told the story of his involvement with the guys from Anvil. From the movie's wiki page: "Gervasi first met Anvil on September 21, 1982, after a gig at The Marquee Club in London, where he introduced himself to the band as "England's number-one Anvil fan." He subsequently became a roadie for the band on their '82, '84 and '85 tours, and was given the nickname "Teabag" by the band. He reunited with Anvil after a break of 20 years, and started shooting a documentary about them in November 2005." Awesome.

Then Morgan Spurlock came out and talked about the movie. (Which was an awesome surprise. I'm a big fan of his.)

Anvil guitarist and lead singer Steve "Lips" Kudlow back in the salad days. Check out the killer locks. He almost looks like a member of NASTY MAGIC!

As soon as the movie ended, the screen rolled up...

...and ANVIL came out and played.

karen, me — I had never heard of them, but the movie is so wonderful and heartfelt that it was really great to get to see them play live after watching a documentary about how much they love to rock.

Plus, the light show was pretty sick.

rob stevenson — Check out Rob totally thinking about signing them. Guy's a sucker for a solid light show.

For seriously.

Lips kept coming down off the stage and into the crowd to do guitar solos.

The crowd was feeling it.

Hot lix.

They put on an awesome show.

At the end, the director came out again and thanked them.

It was basically Spinal Tap come to life (and I mean that in a good way).

karen — After the show, we went downstairs so that Karen could hit the merch table.

karen — Of course she got her shit signed by the band. Hahah.

Breakdown.

I got outside and it was a perfect, "almost spring" evening.

The trees had just bloomed.

Nasty Magic! haha. Haven't seen that in a while. always a hit. someone needs to make doc on that band!
