If the party canary dies, it's TIME TO FLEE THE PARTY.

T-minus 1-day before leaving to get married! We spent our last day in New York running all sorts of last minute errands for our trip. We cleaned the rat cage and made sure they had lots of fresh bedding.

Walking up close.

Can come out? Will be quiet!
cage
After 40 minutes of Maddy whining and trying to squeeze her face through cage, we decided we'd better let her out before she diced herself.
cage
On Thursday night after work, we loaded this critter into her crate (Maddy HATE a crate!) and headed to Penn Station to catch the NJ Transit train to spend the holiday weekend with my family!
cage
We ended up closing out the Sly Fox and heading back to our apartment for some Saturday night after hours. 4:25am. We keep the same hours as our rats. Eeek!
cage
...of VERMIN ADORABLENESS!

Then Meredith saw a Craig's List posting that was looking for people who were interested in adopting fawn-colored rats. She went to pick up the fawn-colored rat and when she arrived they told her that they'd only give her a brown one if she ALSO took a second white rat! Two for the price of one bringing the grand total up to FOUR!

Can you believe that at one point we had FIVE PET RATS? It started out as ONE PET RAT! Then we read that rats are such highly social animals that some people consider keeping them alone cruel! Doh! So we got a second rat, NBD.

After getting used to each other in a neutral setting, we put all four rats into their new home together.

When I got back to our apartment that evening, Meredith was proudly showing off the huge, new, four-level rat cage she'd purchased earlier in the afternoon. We needed a bigger rat cage to make room for...

The rats came out to see what all the commotion was about!
cage
Meredith gave Ratso some loving and then...
cage
She used her crafty skills to make wire "hammock" for Ratso and Roxie.
cage
Meredith is serious about being a good rat-owner like other people are serious about their "normal" pets.
cage
We caught a ride back to NYC with Sarah and Catrinel. We pulled off the highway in the Bronx to get a fruit smoothie at some little roadside stand that was set up and I took a bunch of pics of...
cage
...Meredith assembled her new home.
cage
Meredith and I went out for the night and when we came back, Meredith's flip flops were in Edie's kennel! (Not one of them...BOTH of them!)
cage
She missed Meredith (Awwwww!) so she dragged them in there because they must've smelled like Meredith (Yep, Meredith smells like feet!)!
cage
We left the building to the sounds of this dude singing while doing a little Irish jig on top of the grate. Happy New Year, Dude!
cage
When he started jumping up and down on it like a monkey, we knew it was time to round up the rest of the crew and skidaddle.
cage
It was funny for like the first 30 seconds (but much like the girl who popped her tits out) this guy just wouldn't quit. And by quit, I mean, let the girl out from under the grate.
