United Arab Emirates Part One: NYC to Dubai
After two weeks of frenzied preparation, it was finally time for our vacation! Originally, we had planned on spending an entire month kicking around Thailand, but when I got ready to book our flight, I noticed that a lot of flights from NYC to Bangkok had layovers in the United Arab Emirates, and decided to not book anything until I'd spoken to my friend Bernadette!
Bernadette and I met through mutual friends and had been corresponded online for years, but had never met in person. After graduating school in London, she'd moved to Dubai to take a job as the personal assistant to one of the heads of a very wealthy family in the UAE (a sheik!). A year or so after she moved to the UAE, her boyfriend Philip moved out there to be with her and they got engaged!
I always told her "If you and Philip are ever going to be in New York City, you totally have to stay with us!" To which Bernadette would always reply, "Likewise, if you and Meredith happen to find yourself in Dubai, you totally have to stay with us!" Then we'd always laugh because the idea that Meredith and I would end up in Dubai seemed so unlikely!
The next day I got in touch with Bernadette and told her that if she was serious about putting us up, we'd totally come visit for a few days on our way to Thailand! And she was! Even crazier, Faisal, one of Meredith's good friends from college, grew up in the Abu Dhabai (the other major city in the UAE) and had recently moved back home. When Meredith asked him if he'd be willing to come meet us in Dubai, he told us that not only would he come meet us, but that afterwards, he'd take us back home with him so that we could spend a few days in Abu Dhabi as well!
So that's how our trip to Thailand turned into trip to the United Arab Emirates and Thailand! Yay, the internet! Ok, so now that you know the back-story, here we go!

Tuesday, July 31st

The woman at the ticket counter told us she'd "See what she could do." And then we spent the next 20 minutes in nail-biting agony trying not to freak the fuck out while she pecked away at her keyboard in silence. If she couldn't get us on a flight that day, we didn't even have a place to stay in NYC because we'd sublet our apartment! Arrrgh!
Thankfully, a couple minutes later, the ticket-lady suddenly exclaimed "Done! You're all set!" and handed us our boarding passes!

Wednesday, August 1st

So we found a security desk and they called the gate and the woman at the gate said she'd go on the plane and look for it so we should just sit tight. Ten minutes later, she calls back and says "Well, I just went through the whole area you were sitting in and it's not there. Sorry." DOH!
We spent the next several hours trying to find someone with enough authority to let us reboard the plane and search ourselves - but we had no luck. Three hours had passed at this point and we'd just learned that our plane had been refueled and would soon be headed back to JFK. If we couldn't figure out a way to get the passport, we would end up spending the next two nights in the airport until the US Embassy opened back up, and even then, there's a chance that they'd make us fly back to NYC. Ugh.
Every time we found a new person willing to hear us out, they'd call down to the gate and they'd end up reaching the same woman and she'd just be like "I searched the plane. I'ts not there. I'm not looking again."
With the plane's departure growing ever closer, I finally figured it was time to stop dicking around with the airline and try to get in touch with Bernadette. I called her cell and she was worried sick about us because she knew that our plane had landed four hours ago (and that we were on the flight). She was worried that something had happened and we'd been arrested. (Dubai is notorious for its draconian drug laws - they sentenced a British man to FOUR YEARS IN JAIL because they found an amount of marijuana that weighed less than a single grain of sugar stuck in the sole of his shoe!).
We explained the situation to Bernadette and she was immediately like "My boss is a very powerful man in this country. I'm on the way to the airport now...I'll see what I can do."

We sat down and told her the whole story and she told us not to worry because, "Mahmoun is on his way." I was like "It's midnight! Who's Mahmoun and what's he going to do?" Bernadette explained that he was a man who worked for her boss and that he was a "problem fixer." (Just like Mr. Wolf!!!)
Sure enough, about ten minutes later a very large, serious-looking Emirati man walked up to the armed guards at immigration and with a nod, they let the dude through! We were like "Whoa." Mahmoun came over to us, and asked us to tell him the problem (and he even whipped out a little pad to take notes just like Mr. Wolf!). After we'd finished explaining to him that we were almost 100% sure that the passport was still on the plane, he was like "Meredith you come with me. Bernatte and Brian, you wait here."
He came back like two minutes later with ten airline employees in tow and said something like "This airplane is supposed to fly back to New York in forty-five minutes, but it's not going anywhere until the passport that's on there is found. So let's go find it." Sure enough, just ten minutes later...

See all those buildings across the water? See how there are like 30 or 40 buildings that are each like 40 or 50 stories tall? Philip and Bernadette blew our minds when they told us that when they'd moved into their apartment about eighteen months ago there was only desert across the water from them! Every single one of those buildings you see sprung up in just eighteen months! That's pretty much Dubai in a nutshell.

But before we get to her boss' house, I should probably tell a little back-story so that you'll understand just why I was excited to see it!
As I mentioned earlier, Bernadette and I corresponded for years online before meeting up IRL (that's what an acronym we internerds use that means In Real Life!). Here's the random story of how we met! One day Biba was bored and somehow ended up stumbling upon an entry on this website from one night that I went out with Emma and Hannah Taylor from way back in 2001. She emailed me to say hi and tell me that we had friends in common and after that, we'd occasionally see each other online and chat a bit.
Sometime later, Biba left London and took a job in Dubai as the assistant to a sheikh - because of the NYC-Dubai time difference, she was always online when I was online (because I'm an insomniac and I'm up half the night) so we started chatting pretty much every day. Her new boss is one of the richest dudes in the world (literally) and she'd always have CRAZY stories about her new job and life in Dubai in general.
One night/day we were chatting and she was suddenly like "I've got to go! I'm being attacked by a giant cat!" I thought it was a weird way to end the conversation, so I asked her about it the next day and she explained "My boss likes to raise 'big cats' that he gives as gifts to other sheikhs and dignitaries. But recently, he's started a few of them to the office every day because he loves to see people freak out when they come to his office for meetings!" Since we were always joking around about the excess in Dubai, I wasn't sure if she was pulling my leg, but then a few days later I received an email:
"Hey guys! Just thought I should share with you what I tend to get up to on a normal working day at my office..."
And then when I opened the photos that were attached...
Wait for it...
Wait for it...
