a thing in 91 photos whistler Woke up at 930am with a cloudy view of the mountain. It flurried the whole day! Last run of the day! Can't BEAR to leave you! Thanks again so much for having me out! Aki is one of the organizers of PechaKucha night and she asked me if I'd put together a presentation about something so I put one together... Hahaha. Leslie's gave a really funny presentation about the different kinds of wacky skiing that had been popular over the years. The view doesn't get old. On the other side, we met up with Leslie! (I still dream about this.) On a wire between two mountain. The view through the gondola's GLASS FLOOR. A little after 4pm, we took off our boards and nestled into a snowbank... ...so that Grant could call into a radio show to chat about an opinion piece of his that had recently been published about Canadians and the Queen of England! . Hard at work on a Monday! Hoverboard! GREAT WHITE BOUNDARY. Thanks for having me, bud! Not a bad little Monday. ...then this. At the peak, we made plans to meet up with Matt a little later. Grant did some hand walking... Steep! Monday was also incredible. No people! Monday morning means having the mountain to yourself. Later that evening, we headed over to Aki's aunt and uncle's house... Around 1pm, we met up with Aki and some friends that were out on the mountain and got lunch Time to get back on... ...the beaten path. <3 Snowboarding down a steep incline with a foot of powder is like a barely-controlled fall through the clouds. So steep! Here's a picture of Grant getting ready to drop in from up above. Still more mountain to go! The mountain is so big and white that it can be really disorientating at times! The mountain is so steep that when you're facing uphill you only have to bend your knees slightly to be kneeling on the mountain! Awesome. Walking across, then up and over. Ready? Waiting to drop in. It's fun to stand at the top and watch people turn into ants as they go down. At the top of the mountain, we kept our boards off so that we could hike up and find some less traveled snow. It's hard to get a sense of just how big this face is; but if you look closely, you can make out tiny specks that are people! Happy Snoopy back on the mountain. Oh, were you ladies interested in some alpine activities? Woke up bright and early on Sunday to another perfect day. Grant standing in front of a 10'+ snow drift of recent snowfall. Not a bad view when you take a breather. Lodge lunch. Not many people at all. Amazing. But clear skies up top! Morning snow shower. We set our bikes by the lake and got our frisbee on! The park we went to was beautiful! A huge grass lawn in front of a lake in front of mountains. ...with a wooden foot path around it. ...there was a pond... Breathtaking views everywhere. The temperature was much better as we started walking down a bit. Wildflowers and mountains. With the sun almost entirely blotted out up at the peak... Grant up top. It was so strange to see what all the trails look like without snow. ...up to the top of the mountain to do some hiking! Got some breakfast around the corner from the apartment... Another perfect day! It's really neat to watch the clouds roll down the face of the mountain. Later we headed out to grab brunch at Grant's favorite spot in town. On Sunday morning we woke up... We arrived in Whistler Village a little past 7:30. Last run of the day. Whistler is SO BIG. When you sit down to take a break, sometimes you won't see another person for ten or fifteen minutes. Later that afternoon it was snowing near the top of the mountain again. Grant leading the way through. Riding through the trees in deep snow is sort of awesomely terrifying. You have to try to keep your speed up so you don't sink and get stuck, but you also don't want to go too fast, because, duh, trees. I always enjoyed skiing more than snowboarding, but this was the day that made me a convert. Into the trees! So much snow! ...and there was another foot or so of fresh snow! It snowed all afternoon. Each time we got off the lift there was fresh snow! Here's the view from middle of the journey where the gondola is at it's peak height of 1,430 feet above the ground. (To put that in perspective, the Empire State Building is1,454 feet tall) ...a glass bottom! Then we decided to take the Peak 2 Peak Gondola that connects the peak of Whistler with the peak of Blackcomb. Later that afternoon, we met up with Matt! Unbelievable. On snow before 10am. About to ride over the edge of the world! I love this photo. ...to go up to the top of Whistler! We got off the gondola, rode down the mountain a bit to another lift... Whistler had around 40-feet of snow as a base! The view of the mountain from their living room window! It was a little foggy in the morning so we decided to go... A quick two-hour drive through the Canadian darkness and we arrived in Whistler a little before 4am local time. There was a Whistler billboard at the airport and you can see Aki and Grant's apartment in the photo they used. Here's Grant pointing to their apt window!
