The March Roundup

Sunday, March 1st

maddy — On Sunday afternoon, Scott brought Edie over to our apartment so she could meet Maddy. Maddy was as interested as she was concerned and kept getting chased in worried circles by Edie. Look at her eyes in this photo. Haha.

maddy — She kept seeking refuge in my lap...

maddy — ...and was surprised to find that Edie (who you can see has her dog-toenails painted!) considered my lap off-limits to Maddy. Haha. MY LAP!

maddy — Maddy was forced to slink away in what is probably the most adorable picture of dejection ever taken.

maddy — But a couple minutes later, they were both excited to learn that my lap has a two-wiener capacity.

maddy, me — Dog friends?

maddy — Taking the doogs out for their first walk together in the Stuytown courtyard.

maddy — Tiny dog in a pink shirt!

maddy — She was so cold when we got her back inside that we had to wrap her up in a towel-nest.

maddy — Aw, really?

Someone brought doughnuts over for Sunday TV night...

...and I realized that I still have a serious treat problem.

maddy — The world's tiniest bean feel asleep with her little chinny-chin our our Meredith's lap like this.

Monday, March 2nd

On Monday, Maddy got introduced to snow.

It was only about three inches, but that's a formidable amount of snow when your tender, pink puppy-belly's only got about a half-inch of ground-clearance!

Tuesday, March 3rd

Graffiti on the subway platform advertisements transformed this baby-holding marathoner into a pirate-feminist-anarchist. PIRATE POWER!

Wednesday, March 4th

maddy — Our Stuytown apartment had so much open space that it was difficult to train Maddy to go to the bathroom on puppy pads. On Tuesday night, I ran out and bought one of those wooden gates so we could keep Maddy quarantined to the hallway while we were gone.

maddy — It took her all of about 10 minutes to use her razor sharp puppy teeth (and tiny puppy raptor claws!) to create a puppy-sized hole in the gate's mesh that she could easily wriggle her way through! Most adorable jailbreak ever!

Wednesday, March 4th

ratso — On Wednesday night, we discovered that Ratso (the first rat we got as a pet) had a big tumor on her side. (If you look carefully, you can see the lump on her right side). I gave her a bunch of carrots...

ratso — ...and a nice long ear-scratching. Her favorite two things.

Saturday, March 7th

vin — On Saturday afternoon, Vin came over to our place to meet the dog before we went out to see the Watchmen movie. He was wearing a hoodie with a repeating camouflage print made up of ninjas. When you zipped up the hoodie...

vin — ...it zipped into a NINJA MASK. Haha.

maddy, meredith — Tiny dog says goodbye!

After seeing Watchmen, the glass pyramid apartment we saw on 2nd Ave on our walk home held some sort of conspiratorial meaning.

Definitely the place most-likely to be a superhero's secret lair (at least that I know about).

Sunday, March 8th

maddy, me — On Sunday, Meredith snapped this pic of me taking Maddy out for a snow-free walk.

ellen, maddy, piper — Later that evening, Ellen brought Piper over to meet Maddy.

Wednesday, March 11th

jeet, maddy, sarah — Later on in the week, Gurj and Sarah came over and got to meet the little one. Paws on display, please.

Thursday, March 12th

On Thursday afternoon, I got an instant message out of the blue from my friend Bev. Her boyfriend Adrian had an extra ticket to see Propagandhi play that night and she wanted to know if I was interested in going! Holy shit, yes!

Nothing made me feel older than not-knowing that one of my favorite bands of all time (that hardly ever comes to the States to play) was playing a show right down the street. The show was amazing.

Dan Yemen's band, Paint it Black, was one of the opening bands and halfway through Propagandhi's set, he came out on stage to sing a few songs.

This is your life.

People were diving the whole show. Hadn't seen that in a while.

The venue is next door to a NYC grocery store called Western Beef.

Saturday, March 14th

maddy — On Saturday morning we went to the pet store and got Maddy her first dog bed.

maddy — And some delicious teething toys.

maddy — Heartbreaker.

anna s, cooper — Later that afternoon, we went uptown to attend Meredith's nephew Cooper's first birthday birthday party!

andrew s, anna s, cooper — Meredith's brother Andrew, his wife Anna, and Cooper, the birthday boy!

maddy — WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL DAY?

Monday, March 16th

mitzi — On Monday we took Mitzi out of her cage to give her a bath...

...and to clean and put a makeshift bandage on a cut she had on her tiny rat paw.

mitzi — Verminy whiskery kisses.

maddy — We also noticed for the first time that sometimes when Maddy sleeps, her eyes roll back into her head.

maddy — She's like the most adorable zombie puppy ever. BRAINS!

maddy — It was just a bad dream, though.

Friday, March 20th

maddy — It's cold and wintery out so I spent all of Friday night hanging out at home with the new pup. She's getting so much bigger!

maddy — Learning her name.

maddy — Learning how to sit!

Sunday, March 22nd

maddy — Maddy likes to nap in sunbeams just like a cat.

maddy — Aw.

maddy, meredith, simone — Later Sunday afternoon, Simone came over!

lisa, maddy, me, meredith, pauly — And then much later on, Lisa and Pauly came over for family night. I set up the timer on my camera and put it on top of the TV to take this FAMILY NIGHT PORTRAIT.

Monday, March 23rd

maddy — If you hate pictures of tiny, speckly puppies wearing homemade t-shirts, you might want to skip ahead a bit.

maddy, meredith — Maddy, like most miniature daschunds, is a complete and total love bug.

maddy, meredith — Whenever someone is giving her affection, she tries to reciprocate by licking. We're trying to break her of this habit, so instead she frantically licks the air with her tongue.

maddy, meredith — If you don't restrain her, she goes right for her favorite licking-spot: THE MOUTH!

maddy, meredith — HIDE YOUR MOUTH! COVER YOUR MOUTH!

maddy, meredith — Thwarted!

maddy, me — Tiny dog in a homemade t-shirt.

maddy, me — Look! It's got a belly that's almost two hand-lengths long!

Later that night, I ran out to the Rite Aid down the street and was totally stoked to see that they'd finally organized all of my favorite AS SEEN ON TV products into their very own section!

I've always been so drawn to this kind of stuff.

I've never purchased a single piece of it. But I'm always amazed that no matter what thing they're hocking, at some point during hearing them pitch it, you start thinking "You know, it would be really handy to have a collapsable fishing pole that I could carry around in my backpack because you never know when....WAIT, WHAT?"

"I don't currently have any leaks, but a pipe could just burst out of the blue and where would I be without some MIGHTY PUTTY on hand?"

"I've never peeled a potato in my life. Is that because they're hard to peel? Would I start peeling and enjoying potatoes if I only had these TATER MITTS? IS THAT'S WHAT'S BEEN KEEPING ME BACK ALL THESE YEARS?"

Saturday, March 28th

maddy, meredith — On Saturday afternoon, I came back from running errands and found these two sound asleep on the couch in the office.

maddy, meredith — When I sneaked in closer to get a better pic, Maddy momentarily woke up to see who was in the room. But as soon as she saw that it was only me...

maddy, meredith — ...she promptly buried her face back under the cushion and went back to puppy-sleep!

geordon, leigh — Late on Saturday night I got an iChat video invite from Leigh. She and Geordon were DJing some huge mega party (in Barcelona?) and had their laptop facing the crowd - so when I accepted the video chat, I was immediately teleported into the midst of thousands of people going apeshit at some huge dance party. Hahaha. Then they turned the camera back around into the DJ booth.

leigh — Just because I stay in on Saturday nights doesn't mean I'm not TELE-PARTYING so hard, yo.

Sunday, March 29th

New shoes (that are exactly the same as old shoes). I hate shopping for new stuff. Which is why 90% of the time I'm just like "This was good. Gimme another one of them." Yes, even with pink sneakers.

I don't think I've seen Propagandhi in about 15 yrs, but somehow Chris Hannah looks exactly the same?? I guess veganism pays off!
