Going through old pics and I found this great pic of my dad's father taken while he was on an island in the Pacific Theater in WWII. Check out the cute pup on his lap.
Josh's wife reached out to me about scanning some old photos of Josh for his upcoming 40th birthday. I was happy to oblige. Jeans and sandals with a walking flexdown when he sees the camera? Classic Newman.
And then spend the late afternoon digging up some funny old photos of Doug as requested by Doug's girlfriend who was working on a surprise slideshow to show at his upcoming 40th birthday!
My dad teaching someone how to waterski by pulling them out of the water by hand a few times. After you get the hang of it, you're ready to go behind the boat!
My dad teaching me how to drive the new riding mower he bought! At first I couldn't drive it because the tractor came with a kill-switch underneath the drivers seat that would stop the engine in case you fell off while mowing. But I didn't weigh enough to keep the switch down! My dad wasn't about to mow the lawn himself and so he went into the kitchen and found a really strong magnet, lifted up the seat and clamped the magnet to the kill switch! Blamo, problem solved!
This brilliant move, however, would come back to haunt him later in the afternoon when he was teaching me how to park the tractor in the shed. I went in to far and started hitting the back wall of the shed, and instead of telling me to hit the brake, my dad just started yelling "STAND UP! STAND UP!" thinking the kill switch would engage and the tractor would stop. But he forgot about the magnet he put on and I drove the tractor right through the back of the shed. Hahaha. Famous family story.
Brett & Me, Halloween 1989. I was Freddy Krueger. My brother asked me to help him look like a punk rocker. I dyed his hair pink, gave him Alice Cooper make-up and made him a rock-shirt with a bunch of hand-drawn logos of all the bands I was into! (I can't read them all, but I do see Anthrax, Metallica, Van Halen and TESLA! hahah).
Uncle Steven driving his sparkly-blue Glastron speed boat, which we all grew up calling THE BLUE BOMB! I grew-up waterskiing behind a tiny boat called a Boston Whaler, but by the summer of 1988, I was a few weeks away from turning 12 and Steven said I was big enough to ski behind THE BIG BOAT!
Every summer, my family would drive up to Bow Lake in New Hampshire and spend a week at my Uncle Steven & Aunt Kathy's lakehouse on Beech Island! Here's a shot of Brian Crowell getting ready to waterskii!
She had a great personality and my mom used to put t-shirts on her and take her to my brother's soccer games as the team mascot. Haha. Here she is in her trademark, yellow Crazy Eddie t-shirt. Haha.
On Friday morning I went through some of my parents photo albums and took some pics of some choice cuts. Here's my kindergarten class photo! I'm in the 2nd row all the way on the right.
My 2nd Grade Class photo. I'm on the right in the top row. While looking at this photo, I realized my friend Mary Andrews who I met in NYC in 2000 was IN MY 2ND GRADE CLASS!?! Crazytown! How did we never figure this out! (She's in the 2nd row, 4th from the left!)
...of the house that we lived in from 1977-79. We parked and knocked on the door. The family living there welcomed us in for a look around. Very kind of them!
It's funny that we relate to places we used to live as old friends. I remember my dad's Mustang parked out front of the house. I had night terrors when I was a kid and when I couldn't sleep he'd drive me around the neighborhood.
My earliest memories are from this backyard. I distinctly remember that our neighbors on the other side of that fence had a pumpkin patch and one year a vine came through the fence and a pumpkin grew in our yard. It was exactly as I remembered it over 35 years later. Strange how some scenes are seared into your mind so vividly and others are just not there at all.
Monday clean-up means the discovery of more devices I have known and loved! Clockwise from top-left: 3Com Palm III (1998), Motorola StarTAC (1996), Sony DSC-U40 (one of my favorite cameras ever) 2003, iPod v4 (2003, LG Clamshell VX?? (2005?), Danger Hiptop Sidekick 3 (2006)
My grandfather, Hank Battjer, with his father Henry and grandfather Diedrich. I'm guessing this was taken after Hank had enlisted as a pilot but before he left for the Pacific.
Speaking of family resemblances, Ann & Walt have a few older photographs from my dad's side of the family hanging on the wall. I remember laughing so hard when I took this photo because if you look closely, the woman sitting on the man's lap looks like my dad in a bonnet! Haha.
It's like a photo of Peter Griffin going skiing! (PS - Remember when Fatty and I borrowed all my parents old ski gear to go skiing and it ended up looking like we were going to an 80s party in Williamsburg?)
My dad's parents, Hank and Connie Battjer, with my cousins Chris and Steve. The one on the bottom is me blowing out birthday candles with my cousin Chris watching (and looking like a bug).
Also found a bunch of fantastic old photo albums. I snapped a couple of pics of my favorite pics. Here me with my parents and brother. I think this was from my 5th birthday - which would make it August 1981.
Before we get on with the fishin', I should prolly give you a little background. You see, we come from a fishing family. That handsome devil up there is my dad's father, Hank Battjer. (Holding up what looks like a fresh-water muskellunge)
