Back to back fall weekends at the cabin! Had to wake up early to keep the fire going in the chilly cabin!

Woke up early to get the fire going again. (Ooops, these pics are technically from September, but I'm too lazy to move them to the next entry and republish! Shhhh!)
fire
Pretty nice lil Friday.
fire
Got a fire doing to start burning the crazy amount of cardboard boxes we'd piled up from all the gifts!

ConEd was already on the scene.

Woke up early Saturday morning to some kind of crazy explosion sound. Looked out my window and there was smoke pouring out of grates across the street.

As midnight approached, we moved to the party outside onto the deck!

Fireman Scott got a bucket brigade together lickety-split!
fire
The evening got action packed when a discarded cigarette under the back deck started a fire!
fire
Watching firemen work always makes me feel proud to be a human. I want to buy them all drinks all the time. Nicely done, guys!
fire
Took less than ten seconds to squelch the situation once they got the water flowing.
fire
Just chilling while waiting for the guys across the street to finishing connecting the hydrant to the engine pump. So awesome to see these guys being all casual and routine next to a raging fire.
fire
...and stepped back a few steps to hang out and just watch the car burn.
fire
After the smoke had grown into an open blazing inferno, the fireman seemed pleased...
fire
...the fire got way more intense.
fire
...but as soon as they pried the hood open....
fire
...and we stopped to watch NYPD respond to a van engine fire. It's interesting to watch experts work expertly at a job that you don't know anything about. At first it seemed like just a lot of smoke...
fire
By 4pm we had a nice little campfire going and the chocolates had started taking effect...

We managed to get the entire gang together for a group photo before...
fire
Matt roasted a few dogs before we cleared the embers.
fire
No fires allowed, but a bunch of our clothes were still cold and damp from getting caught in the rain. So we built a really small fire to dry some stuff out before leaving.
fire
...by finding a small amount of burnable wood above the treeline!
fire
...and dried off in front of the fire. Excellent Fourth of July! Thanks for having me, Scott & Erika!
fire
Jeff started fire-twirling with sparklers...
fire
...and all the kinds joined in.
fire
After fireworks, we graduated to s'mores.
fire
...a wooded area with a decent-sized pond and campfire! Where I promptly sat to drink beers and watch the sunset.

While walking Maddy, I stopped to gawk at the charred remains of a 3-car fire that had happened on the block the previous night.
fire
The Volvo was on fire so severely that it managed to burn the back and front of the two cars parked nearest before the fire department got it under control.

fire
On Wednesday afternoon, I ceremonially burned notes given to me by Jeffrey after our third kinesiology session together.
fire
After holding them for three days and reflecting on how they might relate to my life, later that evening I took the notes Jeffrey wrote out during our kinesiology session and destroyed them with fire, per his specific instruction!

My skeptical & scientific exploration of magic & ritual very quickly gave way to a mystical & non-rational exploration of magic.

"Whatever the Thinker thinks, the Prover proves" - Robert Anton Wilson. The Thinker is the non-language-based, right-hemisphere of your brain. Whatever it believes is true, the Prover, the left-hemisphere of your brain will seek to parse out of reality. Tim Leary called these reality tunnels.

All the way back back to Egypt: As above so below.

Mind precedes Matter.

"Every event in the visible world is the effect of an 'image,' that is, of an idea in the unseen world. Accordingly, everything that happens on earth is only a reproduction, as it were, of an event in a world beyond our sense perception." - Wilhelm Reich

The Primacy of Consciousness. An argument as to why the ultimate nature of reality is mental not material. Peter Russel David Bohm's Implicate and Explicate Order.

"Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." - Roald Dahl

In all my reading, I was pleasantly surprised to make the connection that magic is similar to meditation in that it's fascinating to read about or discuss, but you don't actually get any benefit from "believing" in it. You actually have to practice it. Over and over again. It's like getting a prescription from the doctor and reading it everyday instead of taking it to the pharmacist and taking the actual medicine.

If you believe magic doesn't work, it won't. You probably already live in a "reality tunnel" where belief in magic = superstition. That is the place I was coming from at the time. What's interesting about magic is that it doesn't require that you believe in it, it just requires that you actually practice it.

When you first start out practicing any kind of magic ceremony, you're probably going to feel stupid. You won't really "belive" that it's going to do anything. But if you "fake it until you make it" and stick with it a few times, and over time as you repeatedly suspend your dis-belief, what you're actually doing is practicing tricking your brain. And when you're brain gets tricked, you'll start noticing strange sychronistic events in the real world. Whatever the Thinker thinks, the Prover proves. Magic is the western-tradition of re-programming your mind.

Ever had the experience of learning a new word and then suddenly hearing it spoken everywhere? What if that happened with more than words? (Not just the Extreme song)

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!

TLDR: I burnt some paper, reprogrammed the non-language side of my brain, and felt better.
fire
We found a fire pit near the barn and got ourselves a nice campfire going.
fire
...s'mores supplies and a roaring fire!
fire
While we were waiting to board the ferry, there was a brush fire in the hills in the distance that we watched grow larger and larger.
fire
Dessert was on fire!
fire
The next morning we had to hose down the charcoal from our bonfire.
fire
This is about as close as we could get without spontaneous eyebrow combustion.
fire
Nothing like building a fire so well that you can't sit around it! Haha.
fire
...to drink some beers around an awesome driftwood fire.
fire
Ah, that's better.
fire
Perfect!
fire
There was a big fire pit outside where we finished off the night with some s'mores!

A wonderfully pine-crackling way to welcome the new year!
fire
Around 3am, we ran out of firewood and someone got the bright idea to round up a bunch of Christmas trees that were left by the side of the road and bring them down to the beach! MORE FIRE!
fire
Around 10pm, we shoved sand onto the fire...
fire
Later that evening, all the guests that had arrived and gotten settled in went down to the beach for a camp fire.
fire
We arrived to find a roaring fire...
