Late afternoon view. ...needed more smaller pieces so we could keep the wood stove in the cabin going. Nicely done, Gurj! Back at the cabin, Gurj got busy splitting wood with a sledge and a wedge. ...and then we grabbed some beers and went for a hike on the mountain. So nice to hang with these lovelies and enjoy a fire in the sun. Back to back fall weekends at the cabin! Had to wake up early to keep the fire going in the chilly cabin! ...and then did a late night drive up to my cabin. Arrived at 3am! Then we loaded up the Wolverine and hit the road. ...I brought the skeleton out of the outhouse and back into the cabin. Before leaving, we had to drain the rainwater barrels... ...up to the top of my property. After our hike, we hung out at the cabin for a bit... Nice to be out of the city sometimes. ;) Opened the outhouse to discover that Grant had hidden the skeleton in there in an effort to scare me. Lol. We picked up a dinner at Man of Kent and feasted back at the cabin. Friday night I drove up to the cabin with Matt. Met up with Grant at Odessa (RIP!) to give him the keys to the cabin so he could go up there for a few days. I'm writing this in May of 2022 and I'm sad to report that Dreiss just passed away two weeks ago. RIP, buddy! You were such a good boy! Nice job, buddy. Took Maddy for a morning hike and marveled at a huge, dew-jeweled spider web. ...and made everyone breakfast steak sandwiches. Shawn fired up the grill again.... ...was waking up to stretch and have some coffee. Everyone that camped outside in tents... Woke up to a lovely foggy Saturday morning. Lovely outdoor dinner! Chef Shawn cooked all the first night guests and amazing dinner. Lining up for chow. Despite the bad news about my father, I drove up to the cabin later that evening because I had planned for a bunch of my friends to come up and see the cabin for the first time that weekend. Serious steak situation. Evening hang inside Cynthia's amazing pop-up tent she got for Burning Man. Ta-da! All done! Thanks for all your help, Grant. Looks great! Chef Breakfast-for-Dinner on the case! One of the new packages contained this giant bag of pancake mix! ...we rolled the old fire pit back up the hill so we could... After unpacking a bit... Grant got busy in the outdoor kitchen. Jane and Eunice waiting for pancakes. ...and had some homemade bacon egg and cheese sandwiches! ...bid these two farewell... I got new memory foam mattresses to replace the old bunk bed mattresses! Getting ready for our present-opening party! So many presents! Thanks again to Grant for organizing my surprise housewarming and thanks to all my friends who sent a gift. Totally overwhelmed with gratitude. Woke up to a gorgeous September morning up at the cabin! Woke up early to get the fire going again. (Ooops, these pics are technically from September, but I'm too lazy to move them to the next entry and republish! Shhhh!) Everyone was still conked out. ...with Jane and Eunice. All four Adirondack chair built! On the way home, stopped at Home Depot and bought a lawn mower and some supplies for the fire pit improvement project we planned for the next day. Another load of Amazon packages had arrived... Tuesday was my 41st birthday! Got up early, started cleaning up the cabin and getting ready to head back to NYC to celebrate with my friends. Picked up a pizza from BYTE on the way home. Second box had set of tools and enamel coffee mugs! Thanks everyone! Opened a few more gifts on the Cabin Housewarming Wishlist that Grant put together and sent around to all our friends. Still one of the nicest things that anyone has done for me! Thanks, Grant! In this box was a set of Tick Tweezers and a coffee pot. Ta-da! Two chairs built! After a lumberjack's breakfast, we headed back up to the cabin to start unboxing all the cabin-warming gifts my friends had sent! Time to cut the lawn! ...and headed up the mountain! Right on the Vermont border! Nice to be out of the city in the summer. Made it to the top! ...and headed back down the mountain to drive back to NYC. Enjoying the view on Monday morning. ...just in time to enjoy the sunset. We made it to the top of the mountain and got unpacked... Grant came over to give me this housewarming gift for my cabin! Rainy morning ween snuggles. Tuesday was another rainy day. Waited for the rain to stop for a bit... The land I bought is historic and was involved in an accidental skirmish between settlers and local natives during the French / Indian War. Settled 1754. Attacked by "Indians" 1755. George Brimmer is buried right on the edge of my property. Hung out on the porch and watched the clouds roll through the valley. Post hike morning couch nap! Did some late night lantern-lit interneting via my new cell hotspot. If I zoom out on the map far enough you can see how close my property is to the Vermont border! Cool to open up GPS and see where I am on the property as I was learning the land. After almost 3 hours of wandering we finally found our way back to the cabin. I'm a mountain man now. lol. Pretty excited to be working off grid! ...while I put the groceries away. After getting everything unpacked, I put out Maddy's dinner for her and settled down on the couch. Maddy seemed really confused. She kept looking at me, "Wait, we live here now?" Love this view so much. Home sweet home in the woods! Stayed up taking inventory and making lists of all the things I'd need to buy to make the place more livable / enjoyable. The cabin has an outdoor stove on the porch. Got treated to an excellent... Later that afternoon, we locked the cabin up and headed back home. But there will be plenty more cabin action coming up. On Wednesday afternoon Grant accompanied me to pick up the keys to the waaaay upstate off-grid cabin I'd purchased earlier in the year. (We had to wait a while for the weather to warm up!). After we drove up the mountain on the super steep private dirt road, I gave him a tour of the cabin... ...after I'd finished, Grant walked down to the scenic overlook by the fire pit and said "I think this might be the best thing you've done." lol. We finally found our way back to the cabin... ...that my offer on the cabin upstate had been accepted and the cabin was now mine! Woooooo!
