Later that evening, Grant and Amanda came over to hang out and learn a song that Frank wanted to play at their upcoming Christmas Party.
guitar
...Brandon play an awesome acoustic set!
guitar
...and then I biked over to Piano's late night to see....
guitar
Wandered around the downtown area.
guitar
Nothing better than seeing your friends on stage doing what they love.
guitar
Looks like someone helped Dan Smith with a brand new flyer!
guitar
One of the loveliest family dinners I've ever been to. Sunch a nice time.
guitar
After dinner, we listened to Sean play songs with his family for a few hours.
guitar
I finally decided to part with a bunch of really awesome guitar tab books. The internet wasn't as good back in 1992 so I had to supplement my free time by learning how to play every Metallica song.
guitar
I was really interested in learning how in the world people could get such different sounds out of the same instrument. John Frusciante.
guitar
Somewhere in Time was the very first CD I ever purchased!
guitar
New bedroom.
guitar
A lovely day...
guitar
Flying V cheese grater. Haha.
guitar
There were rumors that David Gilmore was going to turn up and play a show, but he didn't show up at ours.
guitar
Hot licks.
guitar
On Monday night I went to the Bowery Poetry Club to see Brandon play a quick acoustic set!
guitar
If your band needs a shitty guitar player, I'm still available! I will, however, need to borrow a guitar now. I wasn't playing it enough to justify keeping it and an amplifier so I gave it away (to Catrinel, I think?)
guitar
They put on an awesome show.
guitar
Hot lix.
guitar
Bob commandeered the mic...
guitar
On Friday night I went over to my buddy Jared's house to get my pre-game on!
guitar
Jared used to be the lead singer of Group Sounds (a NYC band known best for getting naked on stage) and now he runs a jingle house in NYC that's BLOWING UP called Jingle Punks. Here's Jared playing one of his new tunes for the crowd.
guitar
Joe on the ax!
guitar
Jared and I reminisced about Sexy Joe's previous post-show antics (like when he draped his ding-dong on Meredith's arm!) and we tried to talk him into getting completely naked and posing on motorcycle that was parked on the street, but he totally wasn't having any of it.
guitar
He did finally relent and shyly flashed his peen a little bit though! (Sexy Joe, what happened to you? All growsed up!)
guitar
After the show, Sexy Joe was acting out on the sidewalk.
guitar
Tired of being mocked, Posh figured that the only way he'd be able to show me up was on a real guitar.
guitar
Elliot and Posh Tony making it happen.
guitar
On Wednesday night I went to Lit to see Alle perform with his band Modwheelmood!
guitar
Take two = Perfect! There's SO much amazing stuff going on in this photo: Brandon's doing a spot-on accidental impression of his brother, Monkey's smoking (a smoking dog!) and Alle's jamming out as Lady Sov. Hahaha. Happy Halloween (and Happy Official 10 Year Anniversary of this site! Whoa!)
guitar
I was trying to get another photo of Monkey "smoking" in this photo, but the cigarette fell out of her month (you can see it falling!) right when I snapped the picture.
guitar
Nine Inch Sov, UNPLUGGED!
guitar
Ralph Bishop won the Karaoke MVP award for using Melissa's leg as a guitar to play the entire guitar solo. Hahahaha.
guitar
Not sure who the mustachioed man in the embroidered shirt was (one of the Killers roadies?). But when he broke out his guitar and started playing tunes...
guitar
We ended up stumbling into some bar called Carney's. There was an awesome cover band called The Union playing. After playing a few more songs, the band took a break and I went up and asked their female singer if they'd let me sing a song with them. She was like "Sure, what song?" When I asked if they knew "Don't Stop Believing" she was like "Yup, we know it. If you can hit all the notes, it's all you." (And by the way, this was years before this song was used in the Sopranos finale! Fuck all you Johnny-come-lately Journey fans!)
guitar
...and Rob took to the mic to serenade his new wife!
guitar
Which proved to be....distracting, to say the least.
guitar
Later that night, a whole bunch of us went to go see Fiasco play at the Delancey.
guitar
The show started out normal enough, but then halfway through the set, this wannabe Lenny Kravitz pushed his way up to the stage and started giving Grant funny looks.
guitar
Then later that night I went to go see Apartment play! Here's David cupping an invisble boobie...
guitar
LOL!
guitar
My Pineapple partner and Steve.
guitar
Grant pouting for the camera streetside with Emily (one of the three attendess of the show) behind him.
guitar
Here we are at Fatty's apartment in the morning. After he was done showing us the wall-hooks he'd bought from Guitar Center to hang up his guitars...
guitar
"Hey Frank, play that one Kings X song that you always play any time there's a guitar. Oh, and could you make sure you make your guitar-face? Yeah, that's it. Thanks."
guitar
Hey, it's a Monday morning we went to hang out at Fatty's apartment and were surprised to actually find the Fatty there! He quit his jobby-job, remember? Woooo!
guitar
Chris the Greek was up visiting from DC to attend Grant's "Welcome Back from Hell-A" party. Here we are sending him off after some Tuesday morning brunch (which, is one of the finer points of not having a day job).
guitar
...we passed a guitar shop. Grant and Colin both instanted popped "music dork boners" and wanted to go inside and check out some guitars.
guitar
Ahhh, gotcha. (I'm just teasing you, Jerz. You know I gots nothing but love for the Garden State).
guitar
Colin tried out a vintage jazz bass.
guitar
While Grant kept it real and opted to marvel at the "special edition" fluorescent pink, snakeskin-patterned BC Rich Warlock. fluorescent pink snakeskin??? What kind of asshole would want that?
guitar
Lola played us a solo on her belt-buckle.
guitar
By now, January's unseasonably warm weather had gone away and the month had turned into one of the coldest that NYC had seen in years. This particular night was like 10 degrees and snowing so the place was practically empty. So all of us that were there to see Chris' band were sort of hanging out in the back waiting for them to come on. The band playing before them wasn't about to let us ignore them, so their guitar player walked 40ft off stage (let's hear it for wireless, woooo!) to walk right up to us and play some hot guitar lixxx all up in our faces. It fucking ruled.

After the video, Six Piece Nastee retook the stage...

Before Em & Lo went on, the fabulous Six Piece Nastee took the stage and warmed up the crowd. By the way, four of the six pieces of said nastee are made up by none other Colin (on guitar), Frank (on kit)...

Frank can pretty much play any song you can name on the vibes (and Antonio Di Lullo's the same on guitar) so it wasn't long before Frank started inviting people up for some impromptu karaoke accompaniment. Here's Amanda cutting loose.
guitar
Okay, see the kid in the wife beater and silky track suit pants? So he was totally rocking out to the show and Amanda nudged us and was like "Yo, that kid's totally popping a metal boner." We looked over at him, nodded in agreement, and then turned our attention back to the show.

That's when Amanda nudged us again, this time directing our gaze with a finger pointed at his crotch and said "No, look...he's really got a boner!" We had assumed Amanda was talking about a "figurative metal boner" (which we all had) but this was a "literal, honest-to-goodness, metal-boner." So let that be a warning to you, if you plan on seeing the metal-wizardry that is SPEL, make sure to wear loose-fitting clothes from the waist down.
guitar
Case in point, here's one last pic. C'mon, admit it. You're hard right now, aren't you?
guitar
...the two long-haired, metal-gods that front the band. Check these two dudes out - they are no joke.
guitar
Here's my room. How fly are those recessed bookshelves. Those motherfuckers took me longer than anything else in the house.
guitar
These next few photos are from when we were in the studio recording our wellspring demo. Here we see super emo-core Josh Tiexiera acting tough.
In addition to trying to get better at formal songwriting - I've also been trying to get better at just letting music flow out of me! Celebrated the longest day of the year by writing a quick 8-bar loop, then pressing record and playing without thinking. Came out sounding summery.
