Monday, August 1st

cynthia, me, pauly — On Monday we met up at Cynthia's to go to the beach. She even let me drive her fun car!

...but then the clouds rolled in and there was thunder. GTFO.

Really doesn't take all that much to make me happy.

Wednesday, August 3rd

On Wednesday my main camera died so I had to scavenge through a pile of out-of-commission-cameras and try to find my least-damaged camera until I could get a new one.

maddy — A little foggy inside but still works pretty decent.

I spent the afternoon taking Vin's awesome drawing and scanning it into my computer for my Temporary Tees idea.

Patent application print-outs that illustrate how the iron-on changes over over time revealing a second-layer underneath. Life is temporary!

catrinel, ellen, jeet — Later that night a bunch of us went over to 3A...

...for a food-tasting party to check out some of the new food products that Quinn and Meredith had been making together!

Thursday, August 4th

maddy, meredith — Taking the hound to the park.

meredith — Later that afternoon, Meredith's second-cousin Noah came over for a visit.

Friday, August 5th

My former colleague Geoff came by with his girlfriend to pick up the bookshelves, now all that remained was...

books — ...to cart over all the books to the second-hand bookstore on St. Marks!

Afterwards, Mer I used some of our sold-books money to grab lunch and we saw a TV crew interviewing Jimmy McMillan about his mayoral candidacy...

...in the Rent Is Too Damn High party!

Sunday, August 7th

eric g — I Sunday I had brunch with Eric in the West Village then I...

...went to B&H to buy myself a 35th birthday present!

Monday, August 8th

Nothing makes me happier than sunshine on my birthday! We'd sublet our East Village apartment and rented a house out on Beach 90 in Rockaway Beach. My birthday was move-in day!

quinn — Quinn came by in the morning and graciously lent us her car so that we could more-easily haul our stuff out there! (Thanks so much!)

maddy, meredith — All packed up and ready to go!

quinn — We even found a little something something in the glove box for the drive! (I think Quinn said it was from '93!)

meredith — We arrived to find that the house was in less-better-than-promised condition. The scaffolding was still up, and the yard was piled with trash. But, hey! The roof doesn't leak and it's one block from the beach! Wooooo!

maddy — Hey, whenever you get a chance...

meredith, pauly — A little later that afternoon, Pauly came out to see the place!

We rented longboards...

So happy to be living near the beach.

We drove back into Manhattan to return Quinn's car.

I picked up my bike and we headed back out to Rockaway on the subway.

Tuesday, August 9th

On Tuesday morning I had to do the morning commute into Manhattan to go into Yipit's offices. When I got back, we had ourselves a pizza lunch!

Dessert!

Oh, yes.

Wednesday, August 10th

Did a little bit of work in the morning and then around noon...

me, meredith — ...we walked to the beach!

Empty on a Wednesday.

meredith — It was really hot and sunny...

meredith — ...but it was also REALLY windy.

meredith — Look how much sand the wind was throwing! It felt like we were getting sand blasted...

...so we decided to go get some food!

aki — Checked out some of sweet merch on window display at the local wiggery. Check out the Aki!

Also found out we're just a few blocks from the Queens Public Library. Mer and I got ourselves cards. I really liked this book. Sad and tender. The Rug Merchant

Maddy loves the ocean so much. Watching her run around and chase birds at the water line is so endearing.

Thursday, August 11th

On Thursday I went to the beach by my lonesome.

Me, the lifeguard and one other guy.

meredith — Mer came out and met me later that afternoon.

Gah! (Rockaway had all these great wheatpaste posters of surfing pics all over the neighborhood taken by Reid van Renesse).

Our dollar store had some pretty choice finds. Hand sanitizer available in both cloudy and clear!

If you need a conversation-piece corner table and / OR a bucket, that's in aisle seven.

meredith — They also had shirts that were basically a test to see if your parents are paying attention.

Whoa! See?

I went to the Queens Library and made myself stay there until I'd finished everything I needed to do for work. (It's HARD to concentrate when the beach is so close!)

I finished up six hours later just in time to see the sun go down.

maddy, meredith — Maddy is a big fan of her new evening walk routine.

There was a beautiful sunset almost every night.

And because it's right near JFK, there's all these low-flying jets all the time.

maddy, meredith — Bird hound!

Friday, August 12th

meredith — On Friday afternoon we explored the scary, junk-filled house that on the same lot as the house we were staying in.

meredith, vin — Vin came out to visit us...

...and he and I headed to the beach and had serious life chats.

Friday, August 12th

Saturday was another gorgeous day!

jeet — Gurj and Jared came out to visit us.

meredith — We played Such a Thing.

jared — Haha.

meredith — I would love to have close by tonight!

jared, jeet — I was kind of in the middle of an existential crisis and didn't know what to even do with myself. Gurj and Jared suggested we go for a drive and try to find a random place to eat. We ended up finding some awesome chromed-out diner in Benson Hurst...

me, meredith — ...and ordered so much food.

jared — The portions were so ridiculous.

Afterwards, we cruised around some more hoping inspiration would strike twice and we're disappointed when we stumbled upon Maple Lanes (which has since closed!). I don't know if bowling can fix a freak-out, but it probably can't hurt it!

And hey, also: comedy facial hair gumball machine!

jeet, meredith — These gents took good care of me.

me, meredith — Haha.

jared — Ok, now let's get competitive!

I wasn't wearing socks, but luckily they had a vending machine with bowling-themed socks available.

And did so tying Jared's 135 score from the first game!

Jared came back and decisively took game four with a new high score!

After the people in the lane next to us were finished with this EXCELLENT stunt-bowling move (strike between someone else's legs!)....

jared, jeet, me, meredith — ...we asked them to take a group photo for us! Let's hear it for diner / bowling therapy!

I love that you posted that Dima Drjuchin piece! I've been friends with that weirdo since we were 12. He's a good one.
