On Tuesday afternoon, former karaoke super-host, Matt came over for what turned into a four-hour reiki session. Matt's since gone on to become a reiki practitioner!
On Friday night I went to karaoke to celebrate Matt Lesser's birthday! Matt was the "Sid" half of Sid & Buddy karaoke and is one of the two people pretty much responsible for getting me hooked on karaoke.
Tuesday night I went over to Number 1 Chinese (now called China One) to check out Sid and Buddy's new karaoke party that they called to tell me had somehow become a favorite hangout for "slutty models." Hahah.
After the show, we hopped in a cab (too cold for the subway...holy Jesus!) and headed out to Williamsburg to help Matt Lesser celebrate his birthday in karaoke style.
Matt Lesser (aka - Sid from Sid & Buddy's Karaoke) was nice enough to come play emcee for the party. Matt Lavin (aka - Buddy) was out of town so the lovely Candy filled in.
After the (outright boring) trip to the nudy bar, we decided to head to Remote Lounge and take over Sid and Buddy's karaoke night there. (I guess karaoke's becoming a bachelor party trend?)
After dinner I met up with Tins and we headed over to Lit. For the longest time, I'd told her she looked like she could be my friend Matt's bizarro sister. So when we ran into Matt, I asked for a side by side photo. Anyone else see the resemblance?
Which was suprisingly empty. Sometimes you want a packed karaoke joint, but other times less-crowded is better because it means you get to monopolize the stage.
It took him the better part of a minute to figure out how he'd been duped. Here's Matt (er, I mean Sid) shaking his hand and handing over the karaoke mic so that Jamie could...
Dennis Crowley, founder of Dodgeball (and in my estimation) the very first person to have an episodic photo diary on the web, showed up to kick a little Wanted (Dead of Alive) the crowd's way.
After we finished making up stupid babynames, we headed into Soho to try to catch the Monday night edition of Sid and Buddy karaoke, only to arrive and find Sid and Buddy (aka - Matt & Matt) packing up all of their karaoke stuff and leaving Nolita Tavern in the middle of their set after having a fall out with the management there. We retreated to Dan and Corrie's nearby apartment to reflect on the tragic, sudden end of Sid and Buddy's year long reign at Nolita Tavern (on a side note, I'm writing this in July of 2004 and Nolita Tavern is completely gone. The bar wasn't doing well so Howard, the owner, ended up selling it to John Lombardi, and Lombardi's pizza expanded their restaurant into what used to be Nolita Tavern. So if you ever eat at the famous Lombardi's on Spring Street, and you hear the haunting strains of Laura Brannigan's "Gloria" echoing through the halls, now you'll know why...)
When even the costumes failed to draw the crowd's eyes from the show Leila and her fellow make-out co-conspiritors were putting on, Matt had no choice but to pull out the nuclear weapon of karaoke moves, the "Knee Swing from the Water Pipe." Holy fucking shit.
With Leila having left the stage to get back her make out, Sid was forced to break out the big guns in order to hold the audience's attention. That's right: COSTUME TIME! He enlisted Dan to be his lil' Meg White and represented with a kick-ass version of The White Stripes' "Fell In Love With A Girl."
...then over to Matt who proceeded to use it to get his Hulk-jerk on. After that, the line had pretty much been crossed and no one wanted to wear it anymore. Hulk-jerk? I mean, come on.
This was awesome - Grant was all kneeling behing Matting making faces at him and right as I was about to take the pic, Matt realized what was going on and thrust his ass back and Grant. Hahaha.
But not nearly as happy as this picture makes me. There's too much going on for me to even write about (but I do need to at least mention Seth's gratuitious cupping of Matt's tits).
It was super early, but I decided to pop in and say hi to Sid and Buddy in the basement. Buddy told me that he wanted to me to see if my new camera was fast enough the capture his new, "flaming hand" pyrotechnic toy. (Because, hey, pyrotechnics takes karaoke to a whole new level). Here he is...ready...
Big Daddy tearing it up with Huey Lewis' seminal "I Want a New Drug." Homeboy kicked it so hard he needed not one, but two blonde, hula-clad male dancers. Check out that face; the urgency - can't you see how much Big Daddy wants that new drug?
And I saved the best for last...check out the ghetto pyrotechnics! That's right, they took sparklers and scotch-taped them to the ceiling for the big "Wanted Dead or Alive" Bon Jovi hair-metal finale!
What, you don't believe me? See those two smoking hot, blonde hula girls? Yeah, that's right! They got so hot and bothered by my karaoke jam that right after i was done singing they took me in the bathroom and I totally got down with both of them! So who's gay now, huh? Huh?
