While eating, I busted out my guidebook and decided on Luxor as my next destination. Later that night, I set out to find the Cairo train station on foot and ended up purchasing a ticket to Luxor departing 8pm the next night!
By the way, a funny thing about Egypt: no cars have their headlights on at night! The only time they even get turned on is when drivers flash them while simultaneously honking (and not slowing down for) pedestrians trying to cross the street.
The section of town I was staying in had all sorts of twisty storybook alleys. I felt like I'd walked right into a page from a story in One Thousand and One Nights.
As soon as I got back to my room, I jotted down a whole bunch of notes so I wouldn't forget any of the details of my museum "experience" and then decided to lay down for another nap. Cairo during the day is extremely hot, busy and soooo noisy and loud and a ten minute walk through town is enough to send your body into total sensory overload.
I woke up a little before midnight and decided to check out Cairo's streets at night and to try and find something to eat!
We ended up leaving Winnie's because they didn't have that many songs that we knew. Which I guess can be equally attributed to the fact that half the songs are in Mandarin and that...
We left Winnie's around 1:15am. Not because it was late. Not because we were too drunk (hey, you can never be too drunk for karaoke, right?). Not even because we'd run out of songs that we wanted to sing.
After filling our gullets with treats and booze, someone realized that we were just a few short blocks away from Winnie's! Which is the best karaoke bar in Chinatown (where all the songs are still on LASER DISC)! Check out the rocking troupe we had. Hahaha.
After another 30 minutes or so of waiting (during which Grant almost ended up REVOKING presents), the gang all finally showed up and we headed down to Chinatown for Chinese Christmas Dinner!
After we'd finished wrapping all the gifts, Grant and I decided that we were going to go out and buy a Christmas tree! Rather than just simply bring the tree to either of our apartments, we decided it would be way funnier to break into Fatty's apartment and set the tree up in there. We did this for two reasons: 1) Despite being Jewish, no one seems to love Christmas more than Fatty and we figured he was long overdue for a tree. 2). We'd already broken into his apartment to paint a mural in his backyard and he didn't get angry OR take away Grant's keys to his apartment...so why not! Here's the view of the Christmas Tree place on Ave A & 10th St. all draped with lights!
Somewhere back during the middle of October of 2005, Meredith and I, who had been fighting a lot, decided to break up (don't worry, we've long since gotten back together). Right when we broke up, I started going out REALLY late and partying pretty hard to take my mind off things. I'm guessing this photo might have been taken right around when that happened because I can't think of any logical reason why I'd have taken (this totally emo) photo that's time stamped at 4:36am on a Wednesday.
After finishing my lunch, I set out to do more exploring and to try to find a set of electrical adapters so I could recharge my cam batteries before they all died.
Walking down some twisty back road on the way back to my hostel from the pub, I came across these disco lights being projected on the wall across the street. The international sign for only particular thing....NOOOODIE BAR! My pockets bulging with literally THOUSANDS of Estonian Krooni (which is like TENS of US dollars) I was feeling like a tycoon ready to shower bills on hundreds of svelte, exotic, cock-starved Russian teens looking for handsome Amerikan man. I paid the cheap cover (1 drink included!) and parted the curtain into the main room ready to break some hearts (or at least see some sweet, sweet boobs).
I woke up around 9pm and decided to go out and explore the Old Town area with my cam. It was exceptionally cold outside (probably around 10° F) so the streets were hushed, empty and bathed in amber light.
I'll spare you more pics of abandoned buildings. After I started to freeze my ass off, I looped back around and headed for Old Town to look for something to eat.
Then I wandered outside the walled area of town and explored the old Soviet-Era industrial buildings (from 1944 until 1991, Estonia was part of the USSR) near the water (Tallinn sits right on the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea).
I skidded my wheeled suitcase through the windy streets looking for the Vana Tom hostel which seemed like one of the better deals (at less than $50 a night) in this section of town. It also had the added perk of being located...
...Tallinn's "Old Town" which is one of the most well-preseverd medieval-era towns in Europe. See that tower? It's one half of the "Viru Gates," one of the main breaks in the huge wall that surrounded the entire city.
It's weird traveling alone. It's even weirder traveling alone in a Baltic country in the smack-dab middle of winter on a Monday afternoon. The place was utterly devoid of tourists. The only other people walking around were Estonian moms running errands.
After the reception was over, I took walked my rented shoes and fancy tux-clad self westward and became the most formally dressed person to ever be allowed inside...
The view down their block. So it was around this time that my "not feeling too well" turned into a full-on 102 degree fever. Between all the late nights and my nervousness about moving I'd literally made myself sick. I decided to try to find a bodega nearby where I could buy some Advil and juice and ended up wandering around aimlessly for a half an hour before I found a place. (My search was further complicated by the fact that everybody looked at me like I was a crazyperson when I asked about the nearest "bodega." They were like "Oh, you mean liquor store?" I was like "No, like a corner store. Like a place that sells bread and milk and cigarettes." They were all, "Yeah, a liquor store." Me (okay, not saying it but thinking it) "Yeah, whatever you fruity San Franciscan. Nice fanny pack." After securing juice, a sandwich and some med-i-cide, I got silly with Alysha's TiVO and spent some q-time with my buddy Tylenol PM.
On the walk home I realized that Meredith and Leigh's yellow and red hoodies made them look like they were playing "Mustard" and "Ketchup" in a 2nd Grade musical about the lunchroom.
Here's the enormous, creepy stuffed animal perched atop of the traffic signal box on the corner of Houston and Mulberry that I saw while walking up to Bar13 to meet up with...
After a few laps around the hood (and a quick glance at the foot traffic on the sidewalk to ensure no one we knew would see us getting out of SUPERHUMMER) we got to Blue Mountain BBQ.
Amber, Fatty, Vin, Aya and Kat all came over to my apartment and we had ourselves a few drinks and shot the shit - and then when it got late enough to avoid the crowds, we started walking west. Here's Amber (looking like a lil' Disney cartoon) and the Fatty.
See that grate? That's there to prevent cattle owned by one family from walking onto someone else's property (without having to have a gate that blocks all the roads). People and cars can drive over it, but cattle - with their hooves - can't cross it. Neato, right?
